Consumers don’t really use Blackberry apps - so here come Super Apps for businessmen
I’ve always been a bit wary of applications on the Blackberry. It’s not that I don’t think RIM is up to scratch, it’s that apps aren’t really what the Blackberry is for. It’s the premier business mobile in the world, and the flash-bang of the iPhone app store doesn’t really belong there. And it would seem that RIM is thinking along the same lines, as I spoke to Mike Kirkup, RIM Director of Developer Relations, about its philosophy of app development surrounding the Super App.
You know what? Novarra’s “OneWeb” mobile app program is actually pretty good.
How many times have you heard “develop once, publish anywhere”? It’s a phrase that actually makes me stop listening these days. It has been promised so many times by so many different companies that it has lost all meaning. So when OneWeb came up in my interview with Randy Cavaiani, VP Marketing for Novarra, I almost shook my head in despair. But as I talked to Randy, I realised that Novarra might actually be on to something here. Might be.
Nokia is dropping the price for developers who make mobile apps for Maemo
I was lucky enough to get some time during MWC with Peter Schneider (the in house Nokia N900/Maemo guru) this week and he told me a little about new moves for Maemo developers on the Ovi Store. I was very impressed with the fact that they are so intent on adding content to it they waived the token $50 fee. I find this a nice step in the right direction and a gesture signaling that Nokia is ready to have the N900 stores shelves stocked. See a short video interview below:
MWC: Golden Gekko wants EVERYBODY to be a mobile app developer
Golden Gekko is a mobile app developer, with a very tight focus on marketing and advertisers. GoMo News has had quite a lot of contact with the company in the past, and we were glad to catch up with them again today. I talked to Caroline van den Bergh, Head of Product and Michael Campilho, Business Development Director about a new mobile application service from Golden Gekko called Tino - a platform to let anyone create mobile applications, no matter what their level of experience is.
AT&T finally eases up on SlingPlayer: mobile TV iPhone app now works on 3G
This was an interesting story when it first broke last year. Apparently worried about the amount that mobile data was costing it, AT&T was rumoured to have put pressure on Apple to ban a particular application. But now AT&T has announced that SlingPlayer can run over 3G after all. Also, someone may have had a bit of a chat with Ralph de la Vega about mobile data services.
Calling all mobile app developers! Last chance for free tickets to MWC
Last week, we announced our competition to win a day ticket for the BlackBerry App Planet day at Mobile World Congress this year. On Tuesday the 16th of February RIM will be holding a day specially dedicated to mobile application developers - and we’ve got tickets to give away to lucky mobile app developers…

It’s a little more complex than that… making mobile apps for Android
GoMo News reported on a press release from mobile navigation service CoPilot yesterday. In it, I was somewhat scathing about the announced compatibility of the application with the new Nexus One. And thank goodness I was, because I got a response from CoPilot that opened my eyes to new information about developing for Android.
What does Android 2.1 add for hungry developers? Nothing significant.
One of the (several) complaints surrounding the release of Googles Nexus One device was the absence of a Software Development Kit (SDK). The Nexus One is the first, and currently only, device that runs on the latest version of Googles open source mobile operating system, Android 2.1. The SDK is an essential set of documents that allows developers to create apps for the device - and despite the phone already being available for sale, developers still didn’t have their SDK. Well, that particular problem was put to rest today, as the Android Developers site released all the documentation needed.
Not just open, but free: Brew MP mobile OS from Qualcomm
GoMo News reported on the release of the new mobile operating system from Qualcomm last week. Brew Mobile Platform (MP) is based on the mobile application framework from Qualcomm, but takes a step forward into being a true operating system for smartphones. Part of the PR push was about the fact that it is “open” - but that doesn’t always equate to “cheap”. But there’s some good news from Qualcomm…
Android news: updates, downgrades and defragmentation
You want news about Android? I got your news about Android right here, buddy! Even discounting the growing storm of anticipation that is the Google Phone, there is plenty going down for Android watchers today - from Android OS updates, to development budget cuts and the new Google Dashboard.
Blackberry wants closer relationship with app developers
I got the chance to talk to Mike Kirkup from RIM at the Heroes of the Mobile Screen conference in London on Monday. As the Director of Developer Relations, he’s pretty much responsible for making sure developers want to create applications for Blackberry. During this GoMo 1-to-1, we spoke about consumer and enterprise apps, upcoming Blackberry app conferences and the plans RIM has to make developers lives easier.
When is an Android like an iPhone? When you’re a mobile game developer
One of the biggest weaknesses of the Android OS has been highlighted sharply this week, as games developer Gameloft has shown wavering support for the platform. The problem? Device fragmentation and revenue issues. But after announcing a major cut in Android investment, Gameloft has today announced an advanced High Definition games launch for the OS.
Surprisingly fun physics game goes mobile with iPhone
The Science Museum of London has an extremely fun on-line game available on its web site. Launchball has a very simple interface that would work perfectly on a touch-screen - and mobile application developer Bright AI has adapted the game for use on iPhone and iTouch
O2 starts pushing mobile application developer service to customers
GoMo News got an email from O2 today, telling us that the “Litmus” service from the operator is being moved to the next stage in its development. This is being done via an ad campaign, targeted at 1 million O2 subscribers. But what is Litmus?
