Facebook shuts down Glancee
Rating: As it’s acquired the management & development team
Hot on the heels of its acquisition of the photo sharing site, Instagram, Glancee has admitted to being bought by social networking giant, Facebook. The management and development team have already revealed that it is off to join Facebook at Menlo Park and “to build great products for over 900 million Facebook users.” And the service is no more. The announcement leaked out last week [May 4th 2012] but already the Glancee app has disappeared from the Apple iTunes App Store, for example. If you visit the Glancee web site now, you’ll see a link for former users. This takes you to the relevant page on Facebook from which you can download all of your Glancee messages – if you were a member in the first place, of course. Hopefully, Glancee won’t go the way of the Zyb service. Continue reading
Telmap’s CMO, Motti Kushnir, on being Intel’s LBS arm
Rating: Location Based Service (LBS) is the next big battleground
Never a dull moment when you chat with Motti Kushnir who is Telmap’s CMO. He was explaining to GoMo News the thinking around chip maker, Intel’s, acquisition of the Israeli company back in November [2011]. Incidentally, Kushnir actually pointed out that if you took the software and services division out of Intel, it would probably be the third largest software house in the world. Today [February 23rd 2012], Telmap announced the impending release of its version 6.0 of the Telmap Mobile Location Companion service. However, what Kushnir had to say about the whole LBS sector was intriguing. Like, if Apple doesn’t make LBS a central feature of the iPhone 5 (when that eventually sees the light of day), it will be dead in the water. Continue reading

But it does and it has – in the shape of Proximitips. The version of this app has just been released for the iPhone (iPad already being supported). According to Gaurav Katyal, senior project manager for Proximitips, an Android version should become available within four to six weeks and will be swiftly followed by an HTML5 version. What does Proximitips do? Well, it combines social feeds, tips and discounts, plus booking facilities to provide you with an excellent guide to the city’s trendiest hotspots and restaurants. AdMob allegedly steals location info, gets raided
Google hasn’t had the best of relationships with various world governments. It’s stand-up row with China last year was massive news all round the globe, and it has been in trouble with a lot of countries for supposedly stealing private information through roving Google Maps cars. Today sees this tension step up another notch, as police in South Korea yet again raided Google’s offices in the country… seemingly due to activity by Google’s global mobile advertising subsidiary, AdMob. Is AT&T geolocation mobile marketing just spam?
Perhaps the biggest effect mobile apps have had is to show mobile operators what kind of services consumers actually like. Things like mobile shopping and location-based services have been accepted eagerly by the consuming public. But rather than aping apps and GPS, many operators are starting to use their own core functions to provide similar services. A point in case comes from today’s launch of Placecast ShopAlerts by AT&T – a geo-location shopping service that doesn’t require a smartphone. But unless AT&T handles this correctly, the consumer will just see it as more spam marketing. Continue reading
