Truphone is busy this year: mobile VoIP operator expands its Nokia mobile footprint
Truphone has been one busy company this year. It’s a pure-play mobile VoIP service - meaning that it focuses its entire business on allowing people to make incredibly cheap voice calls over the internet, using their mobile phone. So far this year it has launched an Android version of the service, and announced its intentions to create its own VoIP based MVN over Vodafone in the UK. And today it has announced an expansion in its range of Nokia phones.
Despite lower losses, mobile operator Deutsche Telekom has a pain in the OTE
For those waiting to see how Deutsche Telekom was doing financially, this morning the results were published. The company narrowed down its losses for Q4 2009, something it attributes lowered losses to “cost discipline”. But it also got a serious hammering in Greece, where the 2008 purchase of OTE, the largest telecoms provider in the country, has not been paying off.
Partnering with operators beats app stores says Telmap
Rating: Going completely against perceived wisdom, then
Here’s an unusual one. A mobile app developer simultaneously singing the praises of mobile operators and boasting about the volume of its iPhone app downloads. Somehow, Telmap has managed to do this.

Mobile advertising is accelerating says Out There Media
The last time I spoke to mobile advertiser Out There Media, it was planning a Singapore office and a moderate European expansion - among other things. Things have rather picked up speed since then. I managed to grab 15 minutes of CEO Kerstin Trikalitis’ time at Mobile World Congress, for a quick fire update on the snowball effect that has been taking place in operator advertising.
LTE and WiMAX won’t be co-operating any time soon - so says Smith Micro
In the telecoms ecosystem, Smith Micro has been a software developer for about 27 years. Beginning with sending faxes over modems, Smith Micro has been a master in the realm of connectivity for three decades. The move into wireless connectivity was a logical progression for the firm - so I really wanted to talk to someone from the company and find out what the real deal is with LTE and WiMAX. Luckily for me, CMO Robert E. Elliot sat down and talked to me about the upcoming “evolved” network rollout.
Mobile operators joining forces to fight Apple App store? It’ll never happen, says Mobango
Yesterday saw a remarkable announcement from 24 different mobile operators. The group, which contains some of the largest mobile operators in the world, claimed it would launch an open platform to deliver applications to all mobile phone owners. But according to Fabio Pezzotti, Founder of mobile app store Mobango, that is never going to happen.
MWC: Golden Gekko wants EVERYBODY to be a mobile app developer
Golden Gekko is a mobile app developer, with a very tight focus on marketing and advertisers. GoMo News has had quite a lot of contact with the company in the past, and we were glad to catch up with them again today. I talked to Caroline van den Bergh, Head of Product and Michael Campilho, Business Development Director about a new mobile application service from Golden Gekko called Tino - a platform to let anyone create mobile applications, no matter what their level of experience is.
MWC: Flirtomatic keeps it clean for US networks, isn’t all that impressed with the iPhone
I’ve always been interested in Flirtomatic. It’s one of those mobile services that pops up again and again when people talk about success stories in the mobile industry. But my interest has always been from afar. But today I got to sit down with Gary Cohen, Head of Flirtomatic for North America, and we got talk about some of the specifics for the service - like what it needs to do to stay sweet with operators, and where intends to go from here. I’ve always wanted to know more about the nitty gritty of how Flirtomatic actually works, and Gary answered all of my questions.
MWC: mobile media, voice and operators at Showstoppers

It’s the Sunday night before Mobile World Congress… which means I got to head to Showstoppers and meet some cool people. Showstoppers is a pre-MWC event where bloggers and journalists get to meet with some of the companies who will be exhibiting over the week to come.
Location-based social network Gypsii goes multi-national with Telefonica
It’s one of the simple facts of working in the mobile industry - if you really want mass pick up of a service, it’s mostly the operators that need to do it. Location-based social network Gypsii has taken this to heart, and is getting in on the ground level with massive Latin American operator Telefonica for an international social networking deal.
Motorola splits for mobile home entertainment and advanced wireless networks
Motorola has been talking about dividing itself down the middle for quite some time now - the idea first surfaced about two years ago. At the time, it proposed one company for all things mobile, with everything else going into the other company. Now that it has announced a final plan, it’s a little different from that.
Don’t like your Android UI? Don’t worry, there’ll be another one in a minute.
Here’s a cool story about a new Android service. HipLogic is launching a service that will allow mobile operators and mobile makers to embed their own UI on Android devices they support - and to update those UIs over-the-air, as well as launch new ones. This story wouldn’t have had as much of an impact on me before today, but I was discussing the new Acer Liquid Android phone with a friend of mine this morning - and this service would be particularly great for that phone.
Sprint + GetJar = Awesome. Mobile operator teams with indie store for 60,000 applications
American mobile operator Sprint has just announced a major deal with mobile application store GetJar. GetJar is the largest independent application store in the world - and counting everybody else, only the Apple Store is bigger than it. Sprint will now be offering the entire selection of 60,000 apps from GetJar to its mobile customers. Why is this such a good idea? Read on…
