Truphone is busy this year: mobile VoIP operator expands its Nokia mobile footprint

It’s a pure-play mobile VoIP service - meaning that it focuses its entire business on allowing people to make incredibly cheap voice calls over the internet, using their mobile phone. So far this year it has launched an Android version of the service, and announced its intentions to create its own VoIP based MVN over Vodafone in the UK. And today it has announced an expansion in its range of Nokia phones.

picture-13It has been one hell of a week for VoIP. Mobile social network Nimbuzz launched an international call service called NimbuzzOut. iBasis, a company that provides international VoIP for operators, launched it’s very own mobile app. And now Google has announced the acquisition of VoIP provider Gizmo5… and is refusing to say what it wants to do with it yet. Hmmm.

One of the more looked-forward to keynotes at CTIA this year was the address by FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski. While he was mostly optimistic about how mobile operators are behaving in the States (especially namechecking AT&T and Verizon), he declared that the “looming spectrum crisis” is the biggest problem facing Ameria’s mobile industry.
