Motorola promotes RAZR HD to the UK
Rating: We think its NFC capabilities will work at MWC 2013
Just days before the industry’s most crucial trade show – MWC Barcelona, Motorola Mobility decided to announce the availability of its latest RAZR handset – the HD, into the UK. There’s no actual mention of this handset being ‘ranged’ by any of the UK’s networks – only a list of mainly online suppliers. What is even more curious is that – despite hyping its 4G capability as one of the RAZR HD’s main features, there’s no mention of it being compatible with the UK’s only working 4G network – EE. Well, we reckon it is anyway. Plus we think if you got yourself one right now it would work with the MWC NFC app despite not being on the official list. Continue reading

iPhone no longer the UI leader says On Device
Rating: Actually Motorola RAZR users are happier
Another clear sign that Apple is losing its way and that Android based handsets are winning out has been provided by On Device Research. It has mined data gathered from 320,000 mobile and tablet users across six countries to produce a user satisfaction table taken from 92, 825 mobile users in the USA. The report shows the iPhone coming in fifth place behind four Android based handset. Coming as no surprise to GoMobile News, the Motorola Droid RAZR M took second place behind the Motorola Atrix HD. GoMo discovers a NFC campaign that actually works
Rating: Tap4 Offers spotted on London overground train
Here at GoMobile Towers we were beginning to think that something was amiss with Motorola’s NFC [Near Field Communication] capability inside our loan RAZR I (the one with Intel inside). However, to our great delight, it worked perfectly with a service called Tap4 Offers which is apparently operated by KBH – an on-train media company. The campaign is particularly interesting because of its breadth. Not only can you ‘tap’ with an NFC enabled handset, alternatively you could scan in the QR code or text 0000 to the shortcode 78400. The campaign appears to be running in conjunction with London’s South West Trains overground rail company. Continue reading
Confusion reigns over NFC services @ MWC 2013
Rating: The list of NFC handsets has gone AWOL
We’re glad to discover, here at GoMobile Towers, that it wasn’t just us who has been blissfully unaware that Motorola’s RAZR i (with Intel inside) actually supports NFC [Near Field Communication]. We’ve written about our experiences with NFC and the RAZR i previously here. However, the GSMA – which organises the world’s largest cellular and mobile conference in the shape of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, plans to focus big time on NFC at the next show in February [2013]. To this end, the GSMA had produced a list of handsets which ‘already support’ NFC to help attendees. It was formerly found here. It has temporarily disappeared. Continue reading
GoMo finally discovers NFC inside Motorola RAZR i
Rating: Except it didn’t work too well, whoops
Our trusty Motorola RAZR i (XT890) – the version with an Intel chip inside, recently announced that there was a OS (Android) upgrade available. We took advantage of this event and then decided to see if we could work out what 81.5.39001 offered us that the previous version didn’t. BTW, it doesn’t take this RAZR to version 4.1 (jelly Bean). You’re own your own with regards to new facilities because we could find no fancy new services that the upgrade had provided. But – by mistake, we suddenly noticed that support for NFC (Near Field Communication) had been present all the time. Naturally,we rushed to try this new feature out. Sadly, we didn’t get very far. GoMo watches Formula One on a RAZR smartphone
Rating: BBC’s Media Player saves the day on Android
Over the last weekend [3rd-4th November 2012], GoMobile News struggled to watch the Formula One motor racing live in the UK. But then we discovered that it was possible to play ‘catch up’ by using the BBC’s iPlayer service. The question was – how? And the answer proved to be watching via iPlayer on a Motorola RAZR (XT910). Naturally, the screen size – even on the RAZR – was more than a little bit disappointing. Luckily, the RAZR has a built in HDMI port. So using an extremely low cost HDMI cable purchased from eBay, we were able to plug the RAZR into a regular flat screen TV set. This gave us the screen size we needed but not quite the resolution. We’re working on that bit. Continue reading
Shazam launches Windows 8 version of it music discover app
Rating: Perhaps Jim’ll fix my RAZR i version for me
Somehow we don’t see a rush of desktop PC, laptop, netbook and tablets owners installing Shazam so they can hold their device up to a pub’s loudspeakers. Just because Shazam has launched a Microsoft Windows 8 version of its popular music discovery app. However, GoMobile News suspects this has a lot to do with its imminent Windows Phone 8 (Apollo) version. Shazam is, of course, the leading music recognition app but it only recognises commercial tracks. So there’s little point trying to get it to recognise what old rock number the band is currently slaughtering. We reckon that Windows 8 Users will utilise this version of Shazam for viewing tags saved by their mobile phone. If it works on their smartphone, of course. It doesn’t work on our Motorola RAZR i, though. Continue reading
Samsung storms ahead of Apple in smartphone sales
Rating: Even RIM, LG and ZTE sell more smartphones than Nokia says Juniper
Samsung increased its lead in terms of smartphone shipments as Juniper Research estimates that the total number of smartphone shipments exceeded 157 million in Q3 2012. The Korean company shipped a record 56.3 million which was almost double the number of iPhones shipped by Apple (26.9 million). The Galaxy S III played a key role for Samsung with estimated sales of 18 million in the third quarter. Things are getting so dire for RIM and Nokia that ZTE has got ahead of them. LG did well amongst the Tier 2 players compared to rivals like Huawei, Motorola and HTC. Continue reading
Shares in China’s ZTE take a nosedive
Shares in Chinese telecom and mobile operator ZTE plunged 15 per cent in early trading today [15th October 2012] after it warned that Q3 losses would wipe out first half profits.
Only three weeks ago ZTE, the world’s fourth largest mobile phone company, revealed it was to step up production of smartphones to 35 million this year having sold 66.1 million mobile phones overall in 2011. Its meteoric rise has caused concern to other phone makers, particularly in the US where last week a US Congress report branded ZTE and its larger rival Huawei a national security threat and called for the government and telecom carriers to do more to block them from acquisitions and contracts there. Time is running out for Ubuntu/Android project
Rating: NexPhone just needs $946,500 before mid-Nov
When Canonical first launched Ubuntu for Android at the MWC show back in February [2012], GoMobile News was quite intrigued. The idea of capitalising on the fact that the latest smartphones have dual core processors in order to run two different OS simultaneously was impressive. Of course, it is possible to run two different mobile OS on the same device – which is amply illustrated by HP’s TouchPad tablet. We run both the original OS – webOS, along with a version of Android from Cyanogenmod on our TouchPad. But not both simultaneously. With Unbuntu for Android, you can run a desktop OS (Ubuntu) and a mobile OS – Android, at the same time. The catch? As far as we can tell, the software isn’t user installable despite being Open Source based. So we’ve been waiting for a device manufacturer to implement it and that seems to be on the cards with the NexPhone from NexCrea. Continue reading
Motorola RAZRi to start shipping in UK
Rating: GoMobile News stumbles upon this accidentally
We could, of course, claim that we have been ardently scouring The Net for info on the UK release date for Motorola’s RAZR i. However, we were lucky enough to spot this announcement on the Clove UK web site. It says … “ Good news for many of you reading this. On Monday we will be shipping the first stock of the new Motorola RAZR i. Continue reading
Motorola RAZR i pricing made available to Brits
Rating: No news on availability, though
Some good news for Brits anxious to get their hands on Motorola’s very latest RAZR variant – the ‘i’. (See our previous story here). The company has just put out details from five of its distribution partners: – Virgin Media, Tesco, T-Mobile, Orange and Phones 4 U. The update hints at how much you could expect to pay for this handset but still actually doesn’t confirm any release date. GoMobile News is still investigating the pre-release version which Motorola kindly loaned to us. We fully intend to pass on the bugs which we discover. Continue reading
Intel co-brand could work wonders for the Motorola RAZR i
Rating: Joint development between handset and chip vendors
If there was ever a handset which currently could be described as an ‘iPhone 5 killer’, it would be Motorola’s latest member of its RAZR family launched in Europe today [September 18th 2012] – the RAZR i. About the only thing wrong with this smartphone is the spelling. If it had A-p-p-le or S-a-m-s-u-n-g as the brand name on top of the handset’s screen, then everyone – not just GoMobile News, would be singing its praises. Continue reading
