Why 2012 is the year for location based marketing

Grab local customers with social check-in apps!
I didn’t fully understand what LBS(Location Based Service) is when I studied GIS(Geographic Information Service) at my college back in 2002. If I knew how much it would affect in our lives, I might not have changed my major. Approximately a decate later, now, LBS is ubiquitous especially in our smartphone. Mobile marketers [...]

Intel acquires mapping expert – Telmap

Rating: Just as Nokia shuts down Navteq

Intel chose a keynote speech at app developers conference in Seattle (any irony here?) to announce that it had signed an agreement to acquire Telmap which will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Intel. The news comes at the same time Nokia was forced to announce that it is closing down its NAVTEQ mapping and location based services (LBS) operations in Bonn, Germany and Malvern, USA with an expected loss of 1,300 jobs. The contrast couldn’t possibly be greater. GoMo News can only speculate that Intel might have decided to go for Telmap as a means of avoiding any reliance on Google Maps. Don’t forget, Intel hasn’t entirely given up on MeeGo, either. Continue reading

Blackberry buys mobile navigation from Nokia

119498442666107289pin_-red_nicu_buculei_01svgmedThe phrase “buyer beware” applies doubly to corporate mergers and acquisitions. Some legendarily poor purchases have been made (I’m thinking of Ebay and Skype, in particular), but sometimes a buy-out just turns out right. And Nokia buying NAVTEQ has been one of those buy-outs – Nokia has gotten fantastic use out of the digital mapping provider. And we’ve seen it again today as rival handset manufacturer RIM confirms that NAVTEQ mobile navigation will be bundled with Blackberrys from the largest distributor of the devices in the Middle East and Africa – Emitac Mobile Solutions (EMS) Continue reading
