Re-enforcing our assertion that in the UK the drinks industry is leading the way when it comes to utilising mobile technology for product marketing and promotions, GoMobile News came across another mobile friendly poster. We alluded to this in a previous story here we spotted this particular promotional poster for Beck Vier lager in the Boys room at the Slug & Lettuce pub at Clapham Junction [London]. We notice that. once again, it is In Bev, the brewer, behind the promotion as was the case with the Greene King/Stella promotion we mentioned here. This time the poster not only used a QR code but it also employed an NFC chip. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to get the NFC chip to work. Continue reading →

Although NFC (Near Field Communication) might be the proximity technology of the moment, QR codes are far from dead. NeoMedia Technologies which now describes itself as a QR code pioneer (having once fought tooth and nail to keep calling them 2D barcodes), has finally landed its first brand licensee – Kraft Foods Group. In the UK, Kraft is probably best known for taking over Cadburys, the chocolate producer. NeoMedia has apparently awarded Kraft a worldwide, non-exclusive license to NeoMedia’s patents related to mobile barcode resolution. It seems the mobile world is gradually coming to accept that in order to play in the QR space they are going to have to pay the IPR owners. Hence NeoMedia has just announced that it has added two new patent licensees to mobile barcode patent family. The latest to sing on the dotted line are Paperlinks and CodeBroker. Regular GoMobile News readers have always urged mobile barcode speciallist, NeoMedia Technologies, to take full advantage of its IP portfolio. This now consists of over 74 patents awarded and pending worldwide. The latest milestone is that the company has now granted worldwide rights to license its patent portfolio to none other than Microsoft itself. Neither side seem to mention the fact, but this is a major triumph for QR code technology because Microsoft itself was desperately trying to push a rival technology in the shape of the Microsoft Tag. 4.5 million Brits regularly scan QR codes

Rating: Marketers need to do more than simply push content via QR codes

Currently in the UK over half of smartphone users claim to use their phone in some way when out shopping, according to Ofcom. Furthermore, over a fifth of shoppers (21 per cent) are using QR bar code scanning to get more information on the products they are buying. Presently, smartphone penetration in the UK is set at 51.3 per cent which equates to 23 million Brits equipped with smartphones. Given that a fifth of these are regularly using QR code technology,  this equates to over 4.5 million people in the UK using QR codes while they shop. GoMo stumbles across UK banking app for BlackBerry

Rating: HSBC UK finally releases app for RIM phones, we think

You can never be quite sure about these things but GoMobile News thinks we have discovered that the HSBC Bank (in the UK) has finally released the version of its Fast Balance app for those with RIM BlackBerry smartphones. Our guess that this is a news scoop is based on the fact that the BlackBerry App World app store says the current version of this app was released on July 25th 2012. We’ve double-checked and it very definitely is still June 2012. The second clue was the fact that the QR code for downloading the BlackBerry version of this app suddenly appeared on the standard (HTML) version of the HSBC web site. Continue reading →

Brit firm Ensygnia gets QR code Patent for log-in process

We’re not quite sure what the major 2D barcode players like neoMedia and ScanLife will make of this but a UK start-up company Ensygnia has confirmed  that – it had been granted its first technology patent by the UK Patent Office. This win had taken a mere 18 months to achieve. What the company is effectively providing is a secure log-in and check-out services using QR Codes – OneScan. The company claims that thanks to its encrypted QR (eQR) codes, OneScan service marks the beginning of the end for multiple passwords and log-in credentials for anyone accessing Internet services or private networks. ScanLife enters tech spat with logo-centric QR codes

Probably because it was feeling a little bit left out, ScanLife (Scanbuy) has decided to enter the current spat over 2D barcode technology. Avid readers may recall that SpyderLynx has just announced it has received a patent for its SnapTag technology. See here. One of the things which SpyderLynx claims SnapTag can offer is “the only logo-centric mobile activation tool in the marketplace today.” (See here). So what has ScanLife just done? Only gone and sent GoMobile News examples of its latest service for customers. Yessiree, the ability to embed logos into various 2D codes including QR codes. The plot thickens on the NeoMedia vs SpyderLynk spat

This simply cannot be a co-incidence. On exactly the same day [April 10th 2012] that QR/3D barcode specialist – NeoMedia Technologies announced that it is suing a rival firm, the company in question – SpyderLynk declares that it has finally received a patent on its own technology. Curiously, NeoMedia originally claimed that it was suing SpyderLynk over three different patents. Mysteriously, after an intervention by NeoMedia’s Press relations people, GoMobile News agreed to pull any references to NeoMedia’s 7,765,126 patent which was originally mentioned. NeoMedia sues SpyderLynx as scanning figures rise

As mobile barcode scanning expert, NeoMedia Technologies, announced its performance figures for Q1 2012, the company also let slip that it had started another law suit over its patent portfolio. This time the supplier on the wrong end of NeoMedia’s lawyers is SpyderLynx. That’s interesting because SpyderLynx itself is trying to patent the use of embedding a log into a QR code. See our previous story here. For the lawyers amongst our readership, we decided to publish NeoMedia’s Press release on the who legal action bit here. Meanwhile, NeoMedia is staking its claim to be the leading purveyor of QR code scanning software. It says that 20 million handsets use its NeoReader barcode scanning service worldwide (representing 227 countries). NeoMedia files lawsuit alleging patent infringement against SpyderLynk

The SpyderLynk lawsuit, filed in the District Court for the District of Colorado, asserts infringement of three NeoMedia patents related to its mobile barcode resolution technology. Specifically, the complaints assert infringement of the following patents: U.S. Patent Nos. 6,199,048, 7,765,126, and 8,131,597.
