Rating: High tech poster for Beck Vier beer found in Boys Room
Re-enforcing our assertion that in the UK the drinks industry is leading the way when it comes to utilising mobile technology for product marketing and promotions, GoMobile News came across another mobile friendly poster. We alluded to this in a previous story here we spotted this particular promotional poster for Beck Vier lager in the Boys room at the Slug & Lettuce pub at Clapham Junction [London]. We notice that. once again, it is In Bev, the brewer, behind the promotion as was the case with the Greene King/Stella promotion we mentioned here. This time the poster not only used a QR code but it also employed an NFC chip. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to get the NFC chip to work. Continue reading →

Rating: Hires Mark Lanphear hot on heels of Microsoft coup
Hot on the heels of its announcement that the company had landed Microsoft as a licensee (and how many others will now follow suite?), NeoMedia Technologies, has gone on the head hunt. It has just snaffled Mark Lanphear as its new vp for sales in North America. “To be joining an industry stalwart like NeoMedia at such a positive time for QR codes is very exciting for me,” Mark Lanphear commented. “NeoMedia is a company focused on innovation and I look forward to helping drive NeoMedia’s continued success,” he added. Rating: Serious over -exaggerations of our time
Here we go .. tenuous links to the London Olympics of our time. Matt Jones, co-founder of QRlicious writes, “As the political atmosphere heats up here in the USA and tensions grow during the heated competitions going on in the Olympics, we here at QRlicious felt it was the perfect time to address America’s QR Code Crisis. Jones then goes on to ask us to sign a petition. There’s no real petition and we’d hardly describe the situation as a ‘crisis’ but Jones has put all of GoMobile News’ gripes about the amateurish use of QR codes by marketers in one place. On the QRlicious web site. Continue reading →

Rating: HSBC UK finally releases app for RIM phones, we think
You can never be quite sure about these things but GoMobile News thinks we have discovered that the HSBC Bank (in the UK) has finally released the version of its Fast Balance app for those with RIM BlackBerry smartphones. Our guess that this is a news scoop is based on the fact that the BlackBerry App World app store says the current version of this app was released on July 25th 2012. We’ve double-checked and it very definitely is still June 2012. The second clue was the fact that the QR code for downloading the BlackBerry version of this app suddenly appeared on the standard (HTML) version of the HSBC web site. Continue reading →

Rating: We were impressed with FluCamp’s graphics
Every weekend GoMobile News carries out arbitrary testing of the 2D/QR barcodes we encounter in real life. Our research is sometimes flawed but at least we bother to investigate how QR codes function in the real world. This time we ran into a campaign from FluCamp which worked well but wasn’t entirely mobile-friendly. We also discovered 2D barcodes buried on the pages of UK bikers’ publication, Motorcycle News (MCN). There codes proved exceedingly difficult to scan in. Continue reading →
Rating: Does anybody else ever bother to check?
It has always been GoMobile News contention that the drinks [alcoholic beverages] industry is one of the biggest implementers of QR [2D] barcodes as a business sector. Certainly in the UK. And we quite agree that there is some very creative thinking behind the majority of their campaigns. Our only question is … Do you guys ever bother to check these things actually work? GoMobile News has just struggled with one QR campaign from Jameson and absolutely failed on a second one from Guinness. This really isn’t helping build consumer confidence in QR codes, you guys. Rating: Other bits added in time for Xmas
GoMo News has gradually been migrating from using the Neoreader bar code scanner from NeoMedia over to the ScanLife reader from Scanbuy. In practice, the latter has proved more reliable. Anyway, Scanbuy has announced that it has added new feature to its barcode scanning app in time for Xmas. At some point over this holiday period, a version of ScanLife for W7 Mango (Windows Phone) should emerge to plug this little hole in Scanbuy’s mobile OS support. The most intriguing feature in this new offering is a live feed that displays codes being scanned in real-time from around the world. Continue reading →
Rating: Admit it – you did know it was there, either
Playing around with our BlackBerry Curve and the BlackBerry instant messaging (IM) feature, GoMo News was surprised to discover that there is a QR code hidden away (but fully integrated) inside the app. We’d guess that loads of our readers hadn’t noticed it either. The snag is that there’s a definite knack to taking advantage of the QR code to add a new contact to your BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) service. For starters, there’s absolutely no need to download an independent barcode scanner – like the NeoReader from NeoMedia. In fact, NeoReader doesn’t know what to do with it. No. Open up the Messenger app instead and you can scan a friend or colleague’s BlackBerry IM PIN number in and add them to your contacts. Incidentally, we suspect this feature first appeared in BBM 5.0 back in 2009. Continue reading →

Rating: One bloke managed 10K downloads in just one day
Back in February, GoMo News discovered the fastest way to create Android apps via a service provided by AppsGeyser. [See our original story here]. The company has now announced the AppsGeyser API – a new way for webmasters and online businesses to quickly convert their existing inventory of web content into native Android apps. The service is still in its pre-Beta release stage until May 4th [2001] but AppsGeyser co-founder, Vasily Salomatov, told GoMo News that one tester had already created 500 apps and in just one day achieved 10,000 downloads. Rating: Create QR codes for marketing materials for free
Continuing our theme of pumping up all things QR/2D barcode, GoMo News has followed up a hot tip from SocialQRcode which claims to be the ‘first ever QR code generator designed for social sharing and social media. The company’s QR codes work with Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Android Market and the iTunes App Store. Anyone who wants to use it can simply sign up for the service free of charge. Significantly, one of the areas where SocialQRcode sees the codes being used is in marketing campaigns. “Decide which social medium to connect and print your social QR code on brochures, billboards, and bus stops,” the company says. Rating: Definitive proof mobile barcode world is still divided
An eagle-eyed GoMo News reader pointed out that the barcode in our recent story ‘British Airways’ new iPhone app uses barcodes‘ isn’t actually a QR code as most would imagine. Reader Cameron thought BA had gone with a DataMatrix code. But actually it’s an Aztec code. Continue reading →
Rating: Of course Neomedia has IP in both areas, McCready admits
The biggest thing currently holding back the 2D barcode industry is a lack of education, says Iain McCready, CEO with NeoMedia. Which is why he welcomes big industry players such as Google and Facebook getting in on the act, because overnight they’ll make millions ‘barcode-aware’. Continue reading →
