Visa and Samsung in mobile money pact

Two biggest names in their fields come together

Under the deal, Samsung will preload Visa’s pay Wave app on to its NFC smartphones, making it easier for consumers and financial institutions to link their new handsets to their bank accounts. Motorola promotes RAZR HD to the UK

Rating: We think its NFC capabilities will work at MWC 2013

Just days before the industry’s most crucial trade show – MWC Barcelona, Motorola Mobility decided to announce the availability of its latest RAZR handset – the HD, into the UK. There’s no actual mention of this handset being ‘ranged’ by any of the UK’s networks – only a list of mainly online suppliers. What is even more curious is that – despite hyping its 4G capability as one of the RAZR HD’s main features, there’s no mention of it being compatible with the UK’s only working 4G network – EE. Well, we reckon it is anyway. Plus we think if you got yourself one right now it would work with the MWC NFC app despite not being on the official list. Continue reading

GoMo discovers a NFC campaign that actually works

Rating: Tap4 Offers spotted on London overground train

Here at GoMobile Towers we were beginning to think that something was amiss with Motorola’s NFC [Near Field Communication] capability inside our loan RAZR I (the one with Intel inside). However, to our great delight, it worked perfectly with a service called Tap4 Offers which is apparently operated by KBH – an on-train media company. The campaign is particularly interesting because of its breadth. Not only can you ‘tap’ with an NFC enabled handset, alternatively you could scan in the QR code or text 0000 to the shortcode 78400. The campaign appears to be running in conjunction with London’s South West Trains overground rail company. Continue reading

Learn how to build your own campaign @ US NFC Bootcamp

Rating: Get NFC Savvy just before MWC Barcelona 2013

Hence it is organising the NFC Bootcamp in Irvine/Los Angeles, USA. The timing may just be perfect because the event is taking place on February 20th – 21st [2013] just days before the MWC show in Barcelona, Spain. NFC technology will form a part of the mobile and cellular industry’s leading showcase this year, of course. Continue reading

Reatilers will migrate their adspend to mobile

Rating: Retail websites still not mobile friendly enough, says Juniper

Reacting to mainly poor recent experiences on the High Street, retailers will almost double the $28 billion annual spend by on mobile marketing expected for 2013 to $55 billion by 2015. This is one of the key findings in a report entitled, ‘Retail mCommerce: Mobile & Tablet Marketing, Advertising & Coupon Strategies 2013-2017′  from Juniper Research. The report also found that adspend on both tablets and smartphones is continuing to grow strongly. Retailers (most notably in North America and Western Europe) are migrating their own adspend to digital in general, and mobile in particular, Juniper says. Continue reading

Confusion reigns over NFC services @ MWC 2013

Rating: The list of NFC handsets has gone AWOL

We’re glad to discover, here at GoMobile Towers, that it wasn’t just us who has been blissfully unaware that Motorola’s RAZR i (with Intel inside) actually supports NFC [Near Field Communication]. We’ve written about our experiences with NFC and the RAZR i previously here. However, the GSMA – which organises the world’s largest cellular and mobile conference in the shape of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, plans to focus big time on NFC at the next show in February [2013]. To this end, the GSMA had produced a list of handsets which ‘already support’ NFC to help attendees. It was formerly found here. It has temporarily disappeared. Continue reading

Cloud/Linux is behind the success of Barclays’ Pingit app

Rating: Side effect of abandoning mainstream software developers

It has always puzzled GoMobile News as to why the UK’s retail banks have responded so poorly to the obvious consumer demand for banking by smartphone. We’d always assumed it had something to do with data security and/or the time it takes to develop an app fro the three major platforms – iOS; Android and BlackBerry. Let alone developing for Windows Phone 8 (WP8) as well. However, an article in the Sunday Times points the finger somewhere else entirely. According to this report, Barclays has eschewed the use of traditional high tech companies like Microsoft, Google, Oracle and SAP. Instead it has adopted an ‘internal cloud’ model based around using the Linux OS. The result? Mobile app development time dropped dramatically. Continue reading

GoMo’s surefire predictions for 2013

Rating: Ready? Apple will launch an iPhone 6 in 2013

Here’s our surefire prediction for 2013. Apple will launch a smartphone with a model name of the iPhone 6. We’re cheating here, of course. Firstly, we aren’t saying that it will be the next iPhone model because it might call that the iPhone 5S or 5G, or something. Secondly. we are basing this prediction on comments made by Sasha Barron Cohen, aka Ali G of Staines. (See video below). Another prediction is that Nokia will be taken over – probably by Microsoft, if it doesn’t finally start offering Android based handsets. Continue reading

The NFC experience at MWC Barcelona 2013

Rating: Show should sing praises of NFC’s capabilities

In 2013,  the Mobile World Congress Barcelona intends to offer a truly interactive experience for exhibitors, vendors, and attendees to participate in an environment where information and transactions are exchanged through mobile using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. NFC enabled mobile phones have a huge potential to make life easier by letting us, with a simple touch, enable secure access to new transaction and payment services across a range of sectors and industries. The GSMA (GSM Association) hopes its next major event (MWC 2013) will help showcase the benefits of NFC. Continue reading

In Bev utilises mobile technology again – this time with NFC

Rating: High tech poster for Beck Vier beer found in Boys Room

Re-enforcing our assertion that in the UK the drinks industry is leading the way when it comes to utilising mobile technology for product marketing and promotions, GoMobile News came across another mobile friendly poster. We alluded to this in a previous story here we spotted this particular promotional poster for Beck Vier lager in the Boys room at the Slug & Lettuce pub at Clapham Junction [London]. We notice that. once again, it is In Bev, the brewer, behind the promotion as was the case with the Greene King/Stella promotion we mentioned here. This time the poster not only used a QR code but it also employed an NFC chip. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to get the NFC chip to work. Continue reading

GoMo finally discovers NFC inside Motorola RAZR i

Rating: Except it didn’t work too well, whoops

Our trusty Motorola RAZR i (XT890) – the version with an Intel chip inside, recently announced that there was a OS (Android) upgrade available. We took advantage of this event and then decided to see if we could work out what 81.5.39001 offered us that the previous version didn’t. BTW, it doesn’t take this RAZR to version 4.1 (jelly Bean). You’re own your own with regards to new facilities because we could find no fancy new services that the upgrade had provided. But – by mistake, we suddenly noticed that support for NFC (Near Field Communication) had been present all the time. Naturally,we rushed to try this new feature out. Sadly, we didn’t get very far. Continue reading

Microsoft fights back with Windows Phone 8

Rating: Kid’s Corner could be the dark horse here

Microsoft finally introduced the much-heralded Windows Phone 8 (WP8) yesterday [October 29th 2012] – waiting three days after the official launch of Windows 8 itself. We’re not quite sure why. After all, the new versions of Windows all boast a similar look and feel, the same technology core, plus the same built-in SkyDrive cloud service. Microsoft says Windows Phone 8 is built to work seamlessly with Windows 8 PCs, Microsoft Surface devices and the Xbox 360 console. It didn’t say which version of the Surface, though. At the Press conference in San Francisco (a place usually more associated with Apple), Microsoft showcased WP8 handsets from Nokia, Samsung and HTC. In terms of what WP8 offers, we’d say the latest version of this mobile OS seems to have three main new features: – Live Apps; Rooms; and Kid’s Corner. It also pumped up the Windows Phone Store. Guest Post: The absence of NFC on the new iPhone is not a blow for the industry

by Miles Quitmann, md with Proxama

It’s telling that the absence of NFC on the new iPhone 5 hasn’t been much of a surprise to those of us who have observed Apple’s progress in this area. And Yes, it would have been great if Apple had included NFC; but is that really going to obstruct the march of NFC? We don’t think so. The vast investment in NFC mobile contactless payments and services is not going to wane. And with the NFC-enabled Android, Windows 8 and RIM handsets dominating the smartphone market are we going to see clear water emerge between them and the iPhone? NFC is going to progress at a pace without Apple. This could be Apple’s loss. Continue reading
