by Jenna Berger, research manager for global digital analytics, Nielsen

We learned recently that 28 per cent of mobile users around the globe admitted to watching video on their mobile device daily, so when the Olympics came about we wanted to take a look how UK residents were engaging with their mobile phones during London 2012 events. In preparation for the events, London 2012 launched two official mobile apps and one mobile game here, all available in the iTunes App Store and the Android Marketplace. The first app, called Join In, was promoted as a planning tool and the “essential companion” as a viewer’s go-to for information on the games. Continue reading

Guest Post: How big brands are utilising mobile marketing in 2012

A case study by Khushboo Aulakh for Smartphone Genie

With a significant increase in the use of smartphones and tablets, mobile advertising spend is forecasted to increase by a whopping 62 per cent in 2012 to $6.4 billion, as estimated by research giant, eMarketer. Although mobile represents only 1 per cent of the global advertising industry, companies are developing creative mobile marketing campaigns to reach out to a wider audience. According to an independent research by Nielsen in July 2012, 22 per cent consumers in the United States of America made a purchase after seeing a mobile ad, while tablet users were more likely to make an online purchase compared to smartphone and other mobile users. This is likely due to the larger screen size and better viewing capability of a tablet. Another startling result of the research was that consumers were less likely to make a purchase through their smartphones, such as an iPhone, or tablets because most websites are not optimised for payment processing through a phone. Companies with brick and mortar stores also noticed an increase in offline sales with geographically targeted mobile ads. Continue reading

Half of US subscribers now own a smartphone says Nielsen

Rating: W7 Mango & RIM slip in last 3 months

Only slightly more US cellular subscribers (50.3 per cent) own a featurephone as opposed to a smartphone according to the latest figures (for February 2012) just released by market watcher, Nielsen. If you do the maths another way this means there’s been a pretty hefty leap in US smartphone ownership. The number of smartphone owners has effectively increased by 38 per cent over the last twelve months. By comparison, back in February 2011 only 36 per cent of mobile subscribers owned smartphones and now it’s 49.7 per cent. In essence this is all great news if you happen to be a mobile app developer. Android continues to do well as does Apple’s iOS – so it is RIM’s BlackBerry OS and Microsoft’s W7 Mango OS which are faring badly. Continue reading

US teenagers add to data tsunami by tripling their mobile data usage

Rating: Girls send more texts and boys consume more data. Oh & apps might be to blame

In the USA, teenagers have officially joined the data tsunami by more than tripling their mobile data consumption over the past year [2011]. All this whilst still maintaining their stranglehold as leaders of text/SMS sending. Market watcher, Nielsen, has used data gathered from the monthly mobile phone bills of over 65,000 mobile subscribers who volunteered to participate in the research. It has analysed the mobile data usage to pick out trends among teens in the United States of America. Not surprisingly, it has found that text/MMS messaging still remains the centrepiece of teen behaviour in the USA. Plus it has surmised that apps are also responsible for a great deal of the increased usage of mobile data. The company has also found that sex is a factor. Girls send more texts and boys consume more data. Nothing changes much does it? Continue reading

Nielsen says Brits buy Android but covet iPhone

Rating: more iOS users pay to download than Android fans

It seems that while Brits are buying more Androids than any other make of smartphone, they still actually quietly covet an iPhone, according to research just released by Nielsen. The company says that over the last six months, Android phones have accounted for a commanding 44 per cent of acquisitions which is almost twice as many who bought a RIM Blackberry (25 per cent). Apple with its iOS phones was actually in third place with 18 per cent while Nokia/ Symbian stalwarts represented 7 per cent. Yet, surprisingly only 65 per cent of RIM Blackberry owners rate RIM as their favourite brand, with 11 per cent of these RIM owners actually rating Apple as their favourite. Apple envy is obviously the name of the game here! Continue reading

Nielsen reveals Android insights on app usage

Rating: Sybase says Apple sells apps 9x faster than burgers

America’s Nielsen has finally woken up to the fact that you need to load software onto smartphones in order to accurately gauge exactly what kind of information handset users consume. comScore has been doing this for ages. Anyway, in a Blog on the Nielsen site here, Don Kellogg, director for telecom research and insights with Nielsen, revealed some of the insights gained for this new Nielsen Smartphone Analytics. The main one is that the Top Ten Android apps account for 43 per cent of all the time spent by Android consumers on mobile apps. Although ‘on-device meters’ have been installed on “thousands of iOS and Android smartphones” across the USA, Kellog didn’t bother to divulge the iPhone equivalent stats. (Probably because he’s plugging an Android webinar on September 15th [2011]. Which is a bit of a shame really because a Sybase blog compared iPhone apps to McDonald’s burgers. Continue reading

Report highlights importance of Hispanics mobile users

Rating: Lessons for US movie industry could be applied elsewhere

Entitled ‘The Mobile Consumer: Hispanics, Movies & Mobile’, the report is designed to help those in the US entertainment industry, but it actually provides some useful insights into mobile phone users behaviour anyway. For example, 72 per cent of Hispanic Americans use their mobile phones for virtually every part of the film-discovery process, including movie planning. The report focused on Hispanics in particular because 75 per cent of Hispanics go to the cinema once a month, while 25 per cent see movies three times a month. This is more often than all other polled ethnic demographics. Plus, a recent Nielsen study found that although Hispanics make up are 15 per cent of the total US population, they represent some 28 per cent of frequent moviegoers. Continue reading
