Ovum warns of emerging maturity for MNOs
Revenues from emerging markets to slow by 2017
Industry watcher, Ovum, has warned MNOs [Mobile Network operators] that emerging markets are good but its forecast for 2017 warns of ‘emerging maturity’. The company predicts that a concentration on BRIC [Brazil. Russia, India & China] whilst previously trendy might not be such a brilliant idea as emerging market growth slows. After all, low ARPU across emerging markets means that these markets generate less revenue and profit relative to their subscriber base. Steven Hartley, a telco strategy analyst, with Ovum warns Vodafone that it should worry about speeding up its palliative care for its European operations while it still has the Verizon Wireless cash cow. Industry reaction to demise of UK music retail chain – HMV
Rating: Is this a classic case of no ‘click & collect’ offering?
Over here in Blighty [UK] we’ve all been fond of the little do sitting next to a gramophone which symbolises HMV (His Master’s Voice). Although it enjoys an estimated 38 per cent share of physical music sales in the UK, HMV has just recently slipped into administration. Market watchers appear unanimous in their verdict that online sales have badly hit the chain’s 249 stores. What should HMV have done or do now to save itself? GoMobile News agrees with the suggestion made by Gregory Mead, Musicmetric’s CEO that it should have embraced a click & collect model. We also agree with Ovum’s Mark Little that this development might well give an unexpected boost to digital music sales. Continue reading
Another one bites the dust – bye, bye webOS says HP
Rating: Smartphone OS world loses another major player
Hot on the heels of Nokia spending extraordinary amounts on the Symbian OS and then suddenly dumping it for WP7, HP has dramatically decided to pull the plug on webOS – the mobile OS it bought from Palm. HP acquired the Palm OS for $1.2 billion only 16 months ago (April 2010), and since then it has spent an unknown amount of money on launching the Touchpad webOS tablet and the Palm Pre 3. The decision appears particularly puzzling since the first webOS 3 handset – the Pre 3 – was only just made available online yesterday (see our previous story here), the same day the company decided to pull the plug. A third of UK retailers lack mobile strategy
Rating: Plus far too much emphasis on iPhone, Kony study finds
A survey which included some 100 marketing and IT directors at British retail businesses has found multiple gaping holes in retailers’ mobile strategies. Far too much emphasis is being put on iPhone apps, for example. The study found that 74 per cent of retailers claim to have a presence on the iPhone, yet 58 per cent of consumers prefer to shop and browse on other mobile OS platforms. Moreover, 60 per cent of consumers already claimed to use mobile internet to make decisions whilst physically in-store but one third of retailers still have no plans to implement a mobile strategy. The study was conducted by Vanson Bourne on behalf of Kony last month [March 2011]. Continue reading
Things ain’t so bad for Nokia app developers says Ovum’s Cripps
Rating: Nokia’s support for WP7 could turn things around
Saying that Nokia left its app developers in limbo with the Microsoft announcement is putting it lightly. GoMo News found this official explanation here from the Nokia Forum‘s Bill Perry. Obviously reading from a script he says is that the situation is no different from when Microsoft told its Windows Mobile 6 developers to drop y their existing tools. The way forward is apparently Silverlight and XNA . Luckily GoMo News asked Tony Cripps, principal analyst for devices & platforms with Ovum to shed a little light on this subject. Continue reading
Symbian apps signed for free –official
Rating: Symbian devices still lead Android 3:2
Talk about hiding some of your best announcements under a bushel, news from the Nokia Forum has leaked out very slowly. One of the most significant concessions to mobile app developers is ‘free signing’ as part of the official Symbian Signed programme. This replaces a ‘public beta’ offering for free signing. Symbian is still leading Continue reading
RIM eager to entice developers for consumer Blackberry apps
Rating: News about help with advertising is buried away
You can tell exactly how keen RIM is to get the (unreleased) Blackberry v. 6 OS message across to the developer community when the v. 6 video was playing in the men’s room here at the European Blackberry Developers Day. RIM is battling to attract developers to its platform but is struggling to understand consumer apps. Continue reading
The Beeb criticises device fragmentation
Rating: Ovum’s Cripps warns of the dangers
While GoMo News poked fun at the BBC for the wisdom of launching a mobile app aimed at soccer fans first on Apple iPhones (not exactly the handset of choice for footie afficionados), it seems that the broadcaster isn’t as thick-skinned as some might assume.
The Beeb [BBC] launched an [...]
