HP’s Pre 3 is available in UK for £299
Rating: Strangely US fans will have to wait a little longer
Thanks to Pre Central here, we now know how webOS fans can get hold of an HP Pre 3 (see our previous story here). One way is to visit the Palm Eurostore here. There you can purchase an 8GB version for £299 (presumably inc VAT). The news site also managed to discover two other online sites which seem to have stocks of the Pre 3. One is box.co.uk here which wants £299.98 (inc VAT) and the other is Clove Technology here which wants £322.80 (inc VAT). Incidentally these handsets are SIM-free and could be used on any (GSM) network. Continue reading
webOS publication, Pivot, launched to aid app developers
Rating: Read all about it
Described as a revolution in app discovery and promotion, HP is launching a new monthly publication called Pivot. It is intended to be complementary to the HP webOS App Catalog and a means of enabling readers to learn about new ways of use apps on their webOS devices in everyday life. “Pivot is designed to broaden developer exposure and create a dynamic marketplace for the burgeoning webOS developer community,” HP says. Richard Kerris, vp for webOS worldwide developer relations with HP, commented,”Pivot brings app discovery to a new level for customers and developers alike.” Pivot is intended to co-incide with the commercial availability of the HP TouchPad. HP pumps up webOS with new SDK
Rating: Something about millions of users
HP is doing its upmost to pump up the webOS which it bought from Palm to potential app developers. The first step has been to offer a webOS 3.0 SDK. It claims this has “everything you need to start developing apps for HP TouchPad and the next-generation of webOS devices.” Whoah! Plus – just to be on the safe side it has tidied up the web developers blog which GoMo News assumes it inherited from Palm. What’s behind the redesign? Here’s a clue … “We’ve made evangelism an integral part of the portal.” That word evangelism appears all over the place in the newly rejuvenated app developers blog here. What fascinates GoMo News, however, are the constant references to millions of users. Continue reading
neXva’s multi OS app store woos developers
Rating: Mobile payment system could prove tasty, too
One of our quests here at GoMo News is to help mobile app developers escape the tyranny and arbitrary behaviour of the big app store operators. So we were intrigued by an approach made to us by the multi OS app store, neXva. The company was pushing its neXliner tool which employs QR codes and looks pretty handy. However, what really sparked our interest is its neXpayer payment tool which is adding new payment mechanisms. Plus the company will soon be launching an in app payment SDK that will facilitate one click payments from within mobile apps and works across most mobile OS. Continue reading
Opera retaliates by opening its own Opera Mobile app store
Rating: If-you-can’t-beat-’em-join-’em
Much as predicted by us here, Opera Software has adopted a if-you-can’t-beat-’em-join-’em strategy and open its own app store. Labelled the Opera Mobile Store, it offers a wide catalogue of applications for Java, Symbian, BlackBerry, Palm, Windows Mobile and Android based smartphones. [Notice there's no iOS apps.] Better still, amongst all the free applications there is a good proportion of paid-for apps. So those developers disenchanted with the Android Market, for example, have an outlet for their wares. Android Developers Union please take note. There’s even a portal to help app developers add their software to the Store. Continue reading
Mobile to triump over fixed-line ecosystem
Rating: Apple’s iPad 2 is proof of the pudding says MEF
It’s hard to ignore the media frenzy that is Apple’s launch of the iPad 2. Steve Jobs actually got out of his sick bed to appear at its launch. Of course, it’s easy to believe that anything Apple touches will turn to gold but some of us are old enough to remember the Newton. That device gave us the name – PDA or Personal Digital Assistant, but it was left to Palm to prove that handwriting recognition could work. However, GoMo News is mow convinced that the iPad 2 has cemented the creation of another mobile sector – wireless tablets. So it was interesting to receive the observations made by Andrew Bud, who is global chair of the MEF (Mobile Entertainment Forum) on the impact of the device in the mobile media industry. TripAdvisor’s location aware app for Ovi arrives
Rating: Now we’ve got Ovi & Palm as well as iPhone & Android
It’s refreshing to see a service – TripAdvisor – offer a comprehensive range of mobile apps – not just apps for the Android and iPhone fanboys. Having recently trumpeted their co-operation with Nokia’s Ovi Maps (see here), the Ovi app is now available for free. Of course, the number of compatible Nokia handsets is restricted. HP wants WebOS for $1.2 billion
Rating: Garnet and iPaq skeletons in closet

So HP has decided to buy struggling smartphone supplier, Palm, for $1.2 billion, then? The chief reason given by HP’s executive vp, Todd Bradle, is that he’s after Palm’s ‘innovative operating system’. Shades of history repeating itself, GoMo News would venture. Continue reading
HTC is quite right to drop Palm acquisition
Poor Palm. Things just haven’t been going well for it. Starting with the rumour that Lenovo was considering buying the company, we’ve had an official announcement that it’s up for tender, and a whole lot of speculation as to who might be the eventual buyer. And today one of the favourites, HTC, has pulled out of the running. Why so, and was it right to do so? Continue reading
Will Palm be allowed to dissappear?
Reports seem to show that mobile manufacturer Palm is in quite a lot of trouble at the moment. Starting with rumours last week that Chinese OEM Lenovo was looking at a buyout, it has since become widely acknowledged that Palm is looking for a buyer. But the bad news has piled up this week, with Radioshack dropping Palm devices from its stores – and now it has lost its Senior VP of Software, Michael Abbott. Continue reading
Palm already benefitting from Lenovo buy-out rumours
So… Palm, eh? I’ve never seen a company drop off the map so fast, not after there was so much excitement about the Pre. But yesterdays rumour about a Lenovo buy-out has boosted interest again, and Palm has seen a massive up-turn in share value.

Mobile apps store report from Visiongain
Rating: Bit of an Android/iPhone and North American bias
An interesting report has just been finalised by Vgtelecoms (part of Visiongain), entitled ‘Mobile Applications Market 2010-2015′. The report seems to be somewhat biased towards Apple’s iTunes App Store but the list of companies covered appears to compensate for that. Continue reading
Palm Pre + EA Mobile = Zzzzzz…
It’s a funny thing about Palm – they occupy the same space this year that Motorola did around the time of MWC last year. As in, mostly everybody you ask thinks the company is now kind of irrelevant. But a year of blazing announcements, changes in philosophy and incredible phones has pulled Motorola back into the limelight. So what wonders does Palm have lined up? Continue reading
