Rating: Social media is the most dangerous for phishing attacks

As we approach the New Year, Infosecurity Europe has been sending us the views from exhibitors on what they expect to see in 2013. We picked one of the most relevant to the mobile sector from Ronan Kavanagh, CEO of SpamTitan he predicts that social media risk and subsequent web and network security issues will continue to be a serious concern for businesses in 2013. Bizarre phishing attempts of our time

Rating: Ignore ‘O2 reset confirmation ‘ email messages

Given that GoMobile News subscribes to all five UK mobile networks in order to avoid accusations of bias, when we got a message through on our Hotmail email account purporting to be from O2, we were more than a little curious. On face value, the message said we were trying to reset a handset and O2 was thanking us for staying with the network. The header said ‘O2 reset confirmation’. Except, of course, that no such attempt to reset an O2 handset had been made by us here at GoMobile Towers. Continue reading

Only 5 per cent of smartphones & tablets are protected says Juniper

Rating: Despite the fact that good security apps are free

Despite the publicity given to malware, fraud and device theft and the fact that many of the leading and respected mobile security applications for smartphones are actually free, the vast majority of smartphones and tablets apparently remain unprotected. According to a new report from Juniper Research only 5 per cent of global smartphones and tablet devices have security software installed. The report, ‘Mobile Security Strategies: Threats, Solutions & Market Forecasts 2012-2017‘ forecasts that both corporate and personal users will begin to recognise the need to protect their data. It also predicts that the demand for mobile security products will increase over the next five years to a point where 20 per cent mobile devices will be protected by third party security software. That’s still a massive 80 per cent left unprotected. Continue reading

Guest Blog: Bring Your Own Device and the Mobile Perimeter

by David Harley CITP FBCS CISSP, ESET Senior Research Fellow

I crept into the IT industry (and thence into security and eventually the anti-malware industry later than you might think, but still early enough to find myself using and supporting dumb terminals, dedicated word processors, and some pretty primitive PC and Apple desktops – often using terminal emulation software so as to access ‘real’ computing power: Unix or VMS, mostly). Kermit may be a frog to you, but it’s still a communications protocol to me! [Oops, I remember Kermit too. Ed] Continue reading

NetQin ups the anti-phishing capability of it Mobile Security app

Rating: Strikes a deal to add Commtouch’s GlobalView URL filtering

NetQin Mobile has struck a deal with Commtouch to integrate Commtouch‘s GlobalView URL filtering into NetQin’s Mobile Security app. The pair forgot to mention it, but this app will run on Symbian, BlackBerry and Android with support for Windows Mobile currently but not Windows Phone (W7 Mango) quite yet. The move is a reaction to the growing awareness that phishing (stealing personal data) is a growing problem for mobile phone users. Cyber criminals move from email to SMS

Rating: Don’t call phone numbers embedded in a bank’s text

Research from Cloudmark reveals that cyber criminals are moving from email onto SMS and using increasingly sophisticated methods to swindle US handset owners. The company is presently tracking over 20 unique, financial related SMS attacks in the USA with thousands of variants on each attack. Such trends are now expected to make an appearance in the European and UK security spaces. Consequently, mobile users worldwide need to be aware of the telltale signs of SMS frauds and know how to protect themselves. Curiously, Cloudmark doesn’t say if there are any anti-phishing apps available for iOS or Android, for example, which would prove effective. Instead it focuses on solutions which prevent mobile network operators delivering the fraudulent SMS messages in the first place. Continue reading
