QR code stores come out of stealth mode

Rating: Dutch Shop2Mobi says they’ll be massive in 2013

Here’s an interesting take on the dilemma for traditional bricks & mortar style retailers trying to drive more traffic from the mobile internet. How do you get shoppers to visit you? Well, Shop2Mobi, thinks it has found the answer by enabling retailers set up a QR code store online. The company’s offering has effectively been operating in ‘stealth’ mode for two months with 300 virtual stores having been published worldwide in 2012 and over 2,000 have already being planned for 2013. Weekend QR code roundup: Even more sexist promotion from Eurolines

Rating: This time it is on a bar mat

There’s a common theme running through GoMobile News‘ coverage of QR code based campaigns and that is the best examples of such promotions almost always can be found in pubs. So step forward the Ship in New Cavendish Stree in London’s W1 district where we discovered the world’s most sexist bar mat. Once again it is part of bus company, Eurolines’, ‘See What You’re Missing in Europe’ campaign. Previously Eurolines was behind this story ‘GoMo uncovers world’s first sexist QR campaign‘. A couple of drinks related QR codes which don’t quite work

Rating: Does anybody else ever bother to check?

It has always been GoMobile News contention that the drinks [alcoholic beverages] industry is one of the biggest implementers of QR [2D] barcodes as a business sector. Certainly in the UK. And we quite agree that there is some very creative thinking behind the majority of their campaigns. Our only question is … Do you guys ever bother to check these things actually work? GoMobile News has just struggled with one QR campaign from Jameson and absolutely failed on a second one from Guinness. This really isn’t helping build consumer confidence in QR codes, you guys. Continue reading

UKFast claims users can’t be sure where a QR code is taking them

Rating: Don’t blame the QR code – a lack of security is the issue

A Press release put out by a web hosting specialist, UKFast is definitely scaremongering over the dangers potentially involved with scanning in a QR code/barcode from dubious origins. The implication is that if you don’t know what you are doing you can end up with malware on your smartphone. The company claims that a recent attack exposed the security risk after infecting victims’ mobile devices with malware. Those malicious apps then handed over access to all SMS messages, emails and call logs on the device to the crooks, UKFast says. Continue reading

Betfair QR code campaign back(side)-fires

Rating: Get your hand out of the way Zara

A lot of feminists were none too pleased at the recent sponsorship deal by the UK’s female beach volleyball team. The pair – Zara Dampney and Shauna Mullin- have struck a deal to place advertising on their bikini bottoms with UK betting firm, Betfair. The ad takes the form of a QR code on the back of their bikini bottoms which, when read with a smartphone, takes the handset user to a registration page to Betfair’s mobile web site and offers consumers a free bet. “As far as we’re aware, this is the first time QR codes have been used in in-play sports advertising,” claimed Andy Lulham, head of PR at Betfair. “What better way to test its effectiveness than by putting them on one of the places that is likely to get photographed the most?” Continue reading

Farmers to spray cows with QR codes

Rating: One idea from T-Mobile brainstorming session

This is nothing short of brilliant. T-Mobile has recently held a brainstorming session with the UK’s National Farmers’ Union (NFU). Instead of any boring old design, farmers are now going to brand their cows with QR codes. OK. We’ve made that bit up about branding, but when cows go to auction they are now going to be sprayed with a QR code which links back to the animal’s provenance and vaccination history. The best bit is that this information can be read by anyone with a smartphone and these days who doesn’t have one? Continue reading

QRvoice converts speech into QR codes for listening to

Rating: We’re puzzled by its business model

GoMo News has just received a message from one of our readers – Marcel Duran, who informed us that he’s managed to create a site – QRvoice – that converts speech into QR codes. You can find the site here. Then, when you scan in the QR code, it fires up your handset’s audio player and outputs the message as a synthesized voice. We tried it out and it seems to work very well. Now all we’ve got to do is figure out what this technology is best used for. Oh, and work out what Marcel’s business model is too, because there’s no sign of advertising anywhere in the process. Continue reading

Social Passport uses QR & NFC for incentivised social networking

Rating: Keep all of your social networking IDs in one QR code

GoMo News has just come across the clever use of 2D/QR barcodes by a New York based start-up – Social Passport. It only launched recently but already claims to have signed up thousands of users and hundreds of merchants in NYC itself. What the technology does is to enable you to wander around with all of your social networking information stored securely in a single into a barcode or app. Additionally, the same barcode stores the user’s digital loyalty cards and e-coupons. You might think that the bottleneck is the fact that merchants would need to install a special barcode scanner in their stores. But that’s not actually a problem. Continue reading

IP Expo offers state-of-art mobiles apps

Rating: Aims to offer built-in QR code reader

As shows like the Mobile World Congress (MWC) have so clearly demonstrated, offering a mobile app to accompany the event is an absolute must these days. Which is why GoMo News was so impressed to learn that the leading UK technology event – IP EXPO – has just launched its own mobile apps. Rather than merely offering an iOS app for iPhone users, the show’s organisers have commissioned Android and BlackBerry apps, too. If you’re still glued to your Symbian smartphone don’t despair as there’s a really excellent mobile version of the standard web site. To surf it from your mobile phone, just point your browser to http://mobile.ipexpo.co.uk. Of course, that mobile site isn’t just aimed at Nokia owners – it will work for any brand of smartphone (Windows Mobile, bada – even Windows Phone Mango). Continue reading

SnapTags apps for iOS and Android are US only

Rating: Why?

You’d have thought that if you genuinely believe you have a technology that could knock QR codes into a cocked hat, then you might not be just US-centric. Sadly this is the case with SpyderLynk and its SnapTag technology. Its latest announcement concerning Momentum deploying SnapTags for a back-to-school mobile campaign with Office Depot contained this phrase: – “For iPhone and Android users who like scanning, SpyderLynk offers a free app to scan SnapTags.” Unlike other so-called news sites, GoMo News doesn’t just reprint the Press release. No, we took the company at its word and decided to take a look at its Apple and Android apps. After a great deal of searching, we discovered the simple reason why it was near-impossible to download both these apps. They are not available for those outside of the USA. Why? Continue reading

Sex & Tags & QR codes

Rating: Our roundup of ‘recent’ QR campaigns

When GoMo News spotted an article headed ’8 recent examples of using QR Codes for marketing and/or brand awareness’ on Socialwayne.com here, naturally, it grabbed our attention. However, on closer inspection it soon became obvious that plenty of these examples aren’t recent at all. In particular the one from the French clothing supplier, Denim Code. There are two things wrong with using Denim Code as an example: – firstly it isn’t recent, it was done back in 2007. And secondly, the 2D barcodes in question are not even QR codes, they are Metatags (See our mobile barcode 101.) So, we thought it time to give our own round-up of how 2D barcodes are being used. And to point out that the Denim Code example is always used because sex sells. Continue reading

Microsoft says Tag is better than QR

Rating: Tags go up in smoke with Stateline Fireworks

It was nice to hear from Nick Martin, Microsoft’s online community manager for its Microsoft Tag offering. He was commenting on our story here about a major brand (Bulmers cider) using QR codes as a marketing tool. Nick wanted to point out that his company has built “an end-to-end solution that focuses on reporting and capabilities to enhance targeting and content refinement.” In other words the Tag is a much better tool than the QR code. “Unfortunately, the fragmented nature of the QR code space makes it difficult for a brand to know exactly what services and what quality they are getting when executing,” Martin reckons. So he usefully points out where to get hold of the necessary tools. GoMo News looked on the Tag blog and found an interesting case study with Stateline Fireworks. Continue reading
