Digital love: the mobile industry gears up for Valentines Day

Posted by Cian on Feb 10, 2010 13:08

valentines-day-mobile-iphone-nexus-oneChristmas and Valentines Day really pull a big reaction of messaging in the mobile industry. MMS providers go into hyper-publicity mode, reminding everyone that you can send a cute animation to your loved ones rather than a card. So, as we’re within a week of Valentines Day, I’ve been getting a lot of press contacts about the day. And out of the many press releases, I’ve found two that I find rather interesting. MMS analytics provider Amethon looks at MMS content, and mobile navigation company CoPilot launches a Love Search function.

Posted by Cian on Feb 3, 2010 17:56

gune-mobile-searchA new mobile search engine has been launched by one of the largest Palm OS software developers in the world. Handcase is a Brazilian firm, with over 2 million mobile owners using its products in 80 different countires - and today Handcase is promoting its new mobile-only search engine, Gune.

What does it do?

Gune stands for “site” in Basque - and the core offering of Gune isn’t very exciting I’m afraid to say. But bear with me, because I do think this is a great option for the majority of phones.

getfuguThe proposition behind GetFugu is a simple one - you should be able to point your mobile phone camera at something and buy it. And you should be able to say the name of something into your phone and buy it. The “See it, Say it, Buy it” promise at the heart of this augmented reality search app has had a rocky 2009, with legal controversy raising its head in early October. But GetFugu seems to have weathered the storm, and has just announced $800,000 in funding.

Microsoft buddies up - is Bing mobile search app for iPhone trying to be as friendly as Google?

Posted by Cian on Dec 16, 2009 15:08

microsoftMan, Microsoft is really trying hard to be your bestie these days. Its current advertising campaign for Windows 7 (the “I am Windows” business) is clearly aimed at making people feel like they’re an important part of Microsofts world. And now Microsoft is telling major news sources that the reason its online search-engine Bing is being released as a mobile-optimised app for iPhone is that they like everybody.

google-twitterBack in May, Bena wrote an article describing Twitter as a search engine, and showing the major differences between Google and Twitter. Her conclusions included Twitter being the most immediate, up-to-date search service available… but not getting the same kind of quality control or duplication-removal that Google offers.
