Guest Post: Working from home, consumerisation and the Olympics

by Jim Somers, Chief Marketing & Strategy officer with Antenna Software

With over 10,000 athletes from 204 nations converging on London for the Olympic Games 2012, it will be fascinating to see how the city’s communications networks handle the crush of tweets, texts, calls, and Facebook. For the athletes, we can assume that most, if not all, will ‘bring their own device (BOYD)’ to stay connected with family and friends back home. But a whole other BYOD drama will be playing out for the millions of Londoners that work in and around the city. Continue reading

Apple’s iPad 3 rumours round-up

Rating: Following iPhone 5 debacle probably all wrong

As we get closer to March – when Apple revealed the iPad 2 last year – the Apple fanboy rumourmill has gone into overdrive. Personal assistant apps reach Singapore courtesy of Novauris

Rating:

Having sat through the monotony that was the launch of Apple’s iPhone 4S, GoMo News always thought the most significant announcement was the introduction of Siri. Part of iOS 5, Siri is a virtual personal assistant which acts as if it is your butler – like Jeeves. It responds to voice requests and performs all the usual tasks you’d expect to do with a mobile phone. Now Singaporeans have got one up on other countries around the world with a new app called Def!nd. Unlike Siri, Def!nd is able to search for businesses outside of the USA plus it can understand Asian accents. The app is supplied by local mobile operator SingTel, but Novauris has just received permission to say that its own technology powers this app. Continue reading

RIM sort of takes on iOS5 Siri with Vlingo Plus

Rating: Another free app – if you can find it

One of the key ingredients of Apple’s iOS5 upgrade was the introduction of Siri – described as a personal assistant. Well, RIM may just be tackling Siri head on with the introduction of the Vlingo app as one of its set of complimentary apps. This ‘virtual assistant’ app isn’t new. However, it’s been described as worth $19.99 but now represents the fifth of RIM’s free Thank You Gift set of apps. That’s if you can actually find it. GoMo News had trouble locating this app but got there eventually. Continue reading

Siri shows natural language as key UI element

Rating: Apple’s John Scully’s Knowledge Navigator comes true

GoMo News had a sneaking feeling that the announcements made by Apple about the Siri personal assistant as a key feature of the iPhone 4S might have been more important than the impression first given. Well, Bill Meisel, editor of Speech Strategy News, is adamant that we’ve all underestimated Siri’s significance. Sadly, Bill goes into far too much detail here about it here but we’ll try to summarise. We particularly liked the bit where Bill says that incorporating natural language understanding is a classic extension of the Apple philosophy that you shouldn’t need a user manual to be able to perform a particular task.
