Seven carrier alliance upsets the M2M applecart

Rating: Industry reaction to the Jasper Wireless realted announcement

Whoa! There has been massive industry reaction to the seven mobile network operator alliance for M2M which we wrote about previously here. Not al of it has been positive with Frost & Sullivan questioning whether another partnership will defragment the M2M ecosystem. The one common factor which these seven carriers share is that they are all customers of Jasper Wireless. However, there are multiple suppliers for such solutions including Ericsson. Plus this is not the only alliance over M2M in existence. Significantly, this announcement has also draw attention to the fact that M2M is on the verge of exploding as a potential revenue source for mobile network operators. Continue reading

Mozilla introduces a brand new mobile OS – Firefox

Rating: Yet another mobile OS enters the market

Just when you thought the mobile OS sector was fragmented enough – with the likes of BlackBerry, bada and Windows Phone 7 (W7 Mango) already struggling, here comes another completely new mobile OS. Enter Firefox mobile OS brought to you by popular browser supplier, Mozilla. Unfortunately for native mobile app developers, this one stands a very good chance of succeeding. The reasons? Well, firstly this OS is based around HTML5 technology and unless GoMobile News is hallucinating, that means all existing mobile apps written using HTML5 will run on it. Secondly, Firefox OS has a whole bunch of Tier One mobile network operators behind it. Thirdly, two prominent Chinese handset manufacturers – ZTE and TCL, have already committed to it. Finally, this OS is attacking a very clearly defined niche – namely entry-level (read low cost) handsets built for emerging markets. Continue reading

US operators sign up to ESRB mobile app vetting

Rating: But the system itself could be open to abuse

A very laudable initiative from the US-based wireless industry body – the CTIA has persuaded key North American mobile network operators to sign up to a new app vetting scheme. Actually it’s not very new because it is merely the mobile version of a ratings scheme operated by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) . That body claims to already be the de facto ratings group for the majority of video games. It now wants to turn its attention to creating  ’parent-friendly’ ratings for mobile apps – and games are the obvious worry here. The big snag is that neither Apple or Google has signed up to the scheme. GoMo News reckons that leaves a loophole for unscrupulous marketers. Continue reading
