Only 5 per cent of smartphones & tablets are protected says Juniper
Rating: Despite the fact that good security apps are free
Despite the publicity given to malware, fraud and device theft and the fact that many of the leading and respected mobile security applications for smartphones are actually free, the vast majority of smartphones and tablets apparently remain unprotected. According to a new report from Juniper Research only 5 per cent of global smartphones and tablet devices have security software installed. The report, ‘Mobile Security Strategies: Threats, Solutions & Market Forecasts 2012-2017‘ forecasts that both corporate and personal users will begin to recognise the need to protect their data. It also predicts that the demand for mobile security products will increase over the next five years to a point where 20 per cent mobile devices will be protected by third party security software. That’s still a massive 80 per cent left unprotected. Continue reading
Synchronica gets in RCS via NewPace
Rating: Planning to offer RCS-e capability to operator clients
To date, there hasn’t really been much of a buzz around Rich Communications Service (RCS) – which is a GSMA driven standard that unifies different types of communication into a single service on a mobile handset. However, Synchronica has decided to cement an alliance with Canada’s NewPace Technology Development to cooperate in the development, sales and marketing of a Rich Communications Suite (RCS) product. No prizes for guessing that Synchronica is planning to offer RCS to its client base of over 100 mobile operators worldwide. GoMo News suggests that the company has spotted an opportunity which RCS can fill in developing countries without the need for high speed mobile internet. Continue reading
Carsten Brinkschulte moves on from Synchronica
Rating: We remember him best for the screaming phone
It has now been eight weeks since Carsten Brinkschulte resigned as CEO with Synchronica, but he tells GoMo News that it is time to move on and do something new. Brinkschulte remains a shareholder and supporter of the company which he co-founded seven years ago. He expanded the company from a small team in Berlin to the global leader in next-generation mobile messaging with more than 90 operator and 10 device manufacturer customers. However, GoMo News still remembers the early days when we visited Carsten in Munich which – by a happy co-incidence – just so happened to coincide with the Munich Beer Festival. Continue reading
Synchronica tries to clarify Android app availability
Rating: It’s not available from us, honest
Like many other Android handset owners, the news (see here) that Synchronica has built an Android app which will work with all the major Instant Messaging (IM) services, attracted our attention. A really good IM client would be available for free. That’s not quite how the company sees things, though. When Synchronica included this sentence in its release, it hadn’t quite thought through the consequences. It said, “The IM client app for Android can be downloaded from Synchronica Mobile Gateway or pre-installed by the device manufacturer.” That’s a could, possibly rather than a definite ability.Eventually, a Synchronica spokesman told GoMo News, “Synchronica does not offer b-2-c [business-to-consumer] software or services and the IM client will therefore not be downloadable from Synchronica [itself].”
What the company actually meant is that the client app, “Will be made available for download from the carrier brands (e.g. Claro).” Which in this case means América Móvil’s web site.
Our source at Synchronica told us, “Unfortunately, I have no information from the carrier regarding the specific URL at the present time.”
Yet, GoMo News suspects that as soon as such a URL emerges, the Android client will escape into the wild.
Synchronica may just as well bite the bullet and put the client on the Android Market now. It would be simpler for everybody involved. Continue reading
Android IM client app from Synchronica
Rating: Easy way to operator-branded IM services
Acknowledging the market-leading status of Android, Synchronica has produced an instant messaging (IM) client app for Android. It enables operator-branded IM services on Android smartphones. Latin America’s América Móvil will be the first to launch the new client app – under its Claro brand, which is powered by Synchronica’s IMPS platform throughout all its subsidiaries. Importantly, the client doesn’t just support Synchronica’s own service – it also supports popular services such as Facebook, Windows Live, Yahoo!, Google Talk, AOL, ICQ, and Jabber XMPP. The app would normally be pre-installed by the device manufacturer, but it can also be downloaded from Synchronica Mobile Gateway. Sadly the company didn’t say how. Continue reading
