Vodafone enjoys major legal triumph in India

The Vodafone Group has just put out a statement on Indian tax case judgment which has gone massively in the operator’s favour. The judgment of the Indian Supreme Court is that Vodafone had no liability to account for withholding tax on its acquisition of interests in Hutchison Essar Limited in 2007. Hutchison Essar is now Vodafone India Limited, of course. If the company has lost the case it could have been liable for as much as £2.8 billion ($4.4 billion). Continue reading

Discovering that T-Mobile USA has some one million iPhone users on its network even though it doesn’t officially sell Apple’s smartphones (see here) got us thinking. How did so many iPhones get unlocked. Then we received a flier from iPhone Unlockers here which indicated that its unlocking or ‘jailbreaking’ software is available in the UK for £19.99. And this software can be used anywhere in the world (including the USA, obviously) on any iPhone. GoMo News was initially sceptical about this but the site calims it can even jailbreak iPhones running the latest firmware version – 2.0. The list of ‘extra’ facilities it offers is intriguing. Can 4G save T-Mobile USA?
In early February this year, we got another bit of bad news from Deutsche Telekom (DT) – owner of the T-Mobile operator brand. The USA arm of T-Mobile has been underperforming to the extent that DT was expected to announce a partial spin-out of the operator. Perhaps suprisingly then, today has seen the revelation that DT is considering a massive investment in 4G in the US through hedge fund Harbinger. Continue reading
Another one bites the dust – T-Mobile USA could be sold off to the public
Deutsche Telekom (DT) has not been having a great year outside of its home country of Germany. It decided that its English subsidiary, T-Mobile UK, was underperforming so much that it should merged off with another UK operator – a decision that is still going through legal wrangling. And now it has announced that its America operation may be put up for sale to the public through an IPO. Continue reading

The MMA has announced that four mobile operators in the US – Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile USA have agreed to incorporate their mobile marketing guidelines within the MMA’s best practices.
