Tenth of EE stores for the chop
Merging of T-Mobile and Orange brands to blame
EE is to close at least one in ten stores within the next three months following the merging of its former T-Mobile and Orange brands. The re-branding in October 2012 cost EE a rumoured £50 million, but it has left it with more stores on the High Street than it needs. The company, owned jointly by Spain’s Telefonica and Deutsche Telekom, now says it will shut 11 per cent of its existing 700 stores, though the locations have not been named. A question mark similarly hangs over frontline staff, though EE says some will be offered work at alternative stores though it’s thought managers’ job, in particular, will be at risk. T-Mobile UK’s customer service disappoints
Rating: Apparently iPhone 5 demand overwhelms support desk
GoMobile News doesn’t normally get involved with individual consumers’ cases, but we were completely surprised by the situation facing one reader who has been with T-Mobile UK (now owned by EE) for many years. Like many Brits, she had received a brand new handset (in this case a BlackBerry Torch) as an Xmas present. So she needed to get through to her mobile network operator to ask for BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) to be activated. However, she can’t currently get though. And amazingly, T-Mobile is blaming Apple. Continue reading
Vodafone in the dock over ‘misleading’ 4G adverts
EE says main rival shouldn’t promise a service it has yet to be awarded
Britain’s Vodafone is being reported to the Advertising Standard Authority by arch rival EE amid accusations it is duping customers with ‘misleading’ 4G claims. EE, the country’s biggest mobile operator which owns Orange and T-mobile, stole a seven month march on rivals recently when it was allowed to introduce 4G services using existing spectrum. Others like Vodafone, O2 and Three, will have to wait until around summer 2013 before they too can offer superfast services. Continue reading
Britain’s EE geared for possible flotation by end 2013
French and German owners need the cash
The parent firms of Britain’s largest mobile group, EE, have revealed they could soon float part of it off, following similar moves by Russia’s MegaFon and Spain’s Telefonica recently. Gervais Pellissier, deputy CEO of France Telecom which owns EE jointly with Deutsche Telekom, has disclosed an IPO could take place at the end of 2013, although he says the parent companies would remain majority shareholders. Telefonica jettisons chunk of German O2 offshoot to reduce own debts
IPO is Europe’s biggest this year
Spain’s Telefonica aims to raise around £1.2 billion when its spins off nearly a quarter of its German O2 operation later this morning [30th October 2012]. Shares in the the Frankfurt-listed company are expected to trade at €5.60 per share, though some analysts have criticised the price as too high compared to other phone operators. The IPO is Europe’s biggest initial public offering this year and is needed to help shrink Telefonia’s €58 billion debt pile.
O2 is Germany’s smallest mobile operator with roughly 16 per cent of subscribers, trailing Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Dutch group KPN’s E-Plus. Continue reading
UK mobile operators in plan to share networks during outages
Stop the fighting and start cooperating, suggests EE’s Olaf Swantee
Talks are in the pipeline between Britain’s four mobile operators which could see them share each others’ networks during blackouts, EE’s boss Olaf Swantee has revealed. EE, which owns Orange and T-Mobile and whose new 4G network launches tomorrow [30th October 2012], is Britain’s biggest network provider with 27 million customers and has most to lose in the event of an outage. Earlier this month rival operator O2 faced a storm of criticism when its network went down for the second time in six months, hitting 2.2 million customers. Other network providers such as Vodafone have suffered similar problems in the past, with matters not helped by the growth of smartphones and the corresponding rise of network-hungry apps. EE rebrands and launches 4GEE pricing
Rating: Offers free Wi-fi to offset 4G loading
The UK’s EE has announced that it will be folding the old Everything Everywhere, Orange and T-Mobile branded into EE. From the 30th October [2012], all existing Everything Everywhere, Orange and T-Mobile stores will become newly branded EE stores. As predicted, it is called it’s 4G LTE based offering – 4GEE. The launch of the EE brand will be backed by a multi-million pound marketing campaign across TV, print and digital media channels. It has also finally revealed pricing for its 4GEE services and significantly decided to move into content in a big way with EE Film. In a move which should help to off-load traffic from its 4G and 3G networks, 4GEE customers will get free access to BT Wi-fi hotspot network. It also modestly claims that its 4GEEroll-out will be the fastest roll-out of any UK network in history. Continue reading
EE chief’s uphill task to persuade phone makers over Britain’s 4G
Network goes live next week – but only just
Smartphone users benefiting from EE‘s new 4G network in Britain will have the personal intervention of the firm’s CEO to thank, it’s been revealed. With just a week to go before EE’s super-fast network is officially launched, City AM reports how Olaf Swantee – boss of EE and its subsidiary brands Orange and T-Mobile – spent months persuading phone manufacturers to design devices that would run on the operator’s 1800 MHz frequency. The network will also be the only 4G network to work with Apple’s best-selling iPhone 5. Continue reading
Vodafone sneaks in another UK price rise ahead of regulation
Millions of Vodafone UK customers are to be hit with another “sneak” price hike in their bills at the start of next month, despite moves by regulator Ofcom to outlaw such contracts.
The operator, which earlier this year reported annual profits of £9.5 billion, is increasing monthly bills by up to 2.4 per cent on 1st November 2012, adding 59p per month to the average customer bill. It is estimated it will raise tens of millions of pounds for the company and follows similar rises imposed by Orange, T-Mobile and Three. Continue reading
Crunch day tomorrow for Britain’s 4G
Government’s last roll of the dice to avoid court action
Last ditch attempts to broker a ceasefire over Britain’s 4G roll-out take place tomorrow [2nd October 2012] when network operators meet to avert litigation. Though the auction of 4G airwaves isn’t due to take place until the end of the year [2012], these now could be brought forward by the government if the warring parties agree to support Ofcom proposals. Some good news for Brits anxious to get their hands on Motorola’s very latest RAZR variant – the ‘i’. (See our previous story here). The company has just put out details from five of its distribution partners: – Virgin Media, Tesco, T-Mobile, Orange and Phones 4 U. GoMobile News is still investigating the pre-release version which Motorola kindly loaned to us. We fully intend to pass on the bugs which we discover. Continue reading
Everything Everywhere won’t drop Orange or T-Mobile brands
Rating: Just needs a new lick of paint for 4G
Well, Everything Everywhere (EE) – the joint venture between Orange (France Telecom) and T-Mobile (Deutsche Telekom) certainly knows how to grab the headlines in the UK. Not content will getting the jump on its rivals with permission to launch a 4G network over existing spectrum (see here), it has also decided to speak out over ‘brand issues’. Rumours have been circulating on social media sites (probably Twitter) that the holding company is thinking about ditching its original brands. Such speculation has been categorically denied by an Everything Everywhere spokesman who revealed that the new brand won’t replace the existing three. What new brand? Well, has definitely decided that if it is to introduce high-speed 4G services, it will need a new brand. We’re not sure whether 4 UK has gone but Everything Everywhere 4G won’t cut the mustard. Guest Post: The real truth about why you can’t use a mobile phone on a plane
by Matt Rawlings
Quick! Turn off your mobile phone or we’re all gonna die! Or so we are led to believe every time we board a flight in the United States (USA). It seems rather suspicious, just the same that regardless of the hundreds of passengers who fail to shut their mobile phones off, we’ve never had a front page story of a plane going down due to mobile phone interference. But there must be a reason they tell us to turn our devices off, right? So here we go … Continue reading
T-Mobile says British holiday-makers are a nation of ‘Smoasters’
Rating: That’s Social Media Boasters
Six out of ten Brits can’t live without ‘Smoasting’ (Social Media Boasting) whilst on holiday, according to research from T-Mobile UK. It also found that:- four in ten Brits log-on to Facebook and Twitter at least once a day whilst abroad; and almost half of Brits (45 per cent) will only tag themselves on a holiday photo if the location is glamorous and it will make them look good. Naturally this research has been timed to neatly coincide with T-Mobile’s Internet and Broadband Travel Boosters launch. When a traveller wants to ‘Smoast’, the network will automatically re-direct them to a page where they will be prompted to buy a booster. Wonder whose software’s behind this, then? Continue reading
Guest Post: 4G phones – the future of mobile handsets
by Matt Rawlings
Technology is always moving forwards and sometimes it’s just as hard to keep up with it from a consumer point of view as it is to keep moving it on as a developer. The insatiable demand for ‘the next big thing’ from customers has manufacturers and researchers working 25-hour days in the pursuit of perfection and innovation. Continue reading
