Is T-Mobile and Orange about to get the go ahead in UK? If so, say hello to your new biggest operator

Posted by Cian on Feb 22, 2010 12:39

The proposed merger between T-Mobile and Orange in the UK has caused a whole bucket full of regulatory winces. At the start of this month, GoMo News reported how the UK Office of Fair Trading, which was investigating the merger, passed it up to the European Commission to see if the entire process could be sped up. Now both operators are claiming that the EC is on the verge of approving the merger. In which case you could see a new joint-venture between the French and German operators go ahead in the next few months.

Want easier texting? T-Mobile is preloading Swype mobile touch screen tech

Posted by Cian on Feb 11, 2010 13:32

thumbIt’s a little hard to describe what Swype does, because it’s a very visual technology. Basically, it makes writing texts on touchscreen devices WAYS faster. Instead of hitting each individual button to write a word, you use your thumb to draw a single line on the screen - a line that connects every letter you want in the word. Swype then uses predictive texting to place that word on the screen. And today Swype is announcing a huge win - T-Mobile USA has announced that it will be pre-loading the tech on its touch screen devices.

Another one bites the dust - T-Mobile USA could be sold off to the public

Posted by Cian on Feb 5, 2010 13:13

t-mobile-sale Deutsche Telekom (DT) has not been having a great year outside of its home country of Germany. It decided that its English subsidiary, T-Mobile UK, was underperforming so much that it should merged off with another UK operator - a decision that is still going through legal wrangling. And now it has announced that its America operation may be put up for sale to the public through an IPO.

Is T-Mobile and Orange merger being put on the fast-track? UK asks EU to step in

Posted by Cian on Feb 3, 2010 14:43

t-orangeRemember this? It was huge during the middle of last year - T-Mobile UK was basically forced by its German parent company Deutsche Telekom to sell its UK operations. The eventual buyer was Orange. This caused raised eyebrows because Orange is owned by French operator France Telecom. More than one question was raised about the wisdom of having the largest operator in England being a French/German joint venture. Evidently this matter has exhausted the UK Office of Fair Trading (OFT), because it has asked the European Commission to take over the matter.

Good news, UK Android fans! T-Mobile picks up Nexus One mobile

Posted by Cian on Feb 3, 2010 13:09

google-nexus-one-logoOne of the most interesting things about the Nexus One was that you could buy it unlocked straight from Google - no need for an operator. That made it incredibly expensive, so a lot of people went with option 2, which was to buy it subsidized from T-Mobile. But that was just in the States. Now T-Mobile UK has announced that it too will be selling the Nexus One.

T-Mobile issues refunds for increasingly unpopular Nexus One

Posted by Cian on Jan 15, 2010 12:26

angry-android-smlHave you ever heard such complaining? It seems that the Nexus One has already become the biggest anticlimaxes of 2010. Cost complaints, spotty reception, unresponsive touchscreens, terrible customer service, extravagant fees… the list goes on. And now T-Mobile has responded by not only dropping the price of the device, but issuing refunds to people who bought it the earlier price.

mobile-operatorsThere’s an interesting mix of mobile operator news stories today. Deutsche Telekom has admitted that T-Mobile lost customers in the US due to bad 3G coverage. The EU Commission is in the midst of an argument with Germany’s Federal Network Agency over “anti-competitive” behaviour in mobile spectrum auctions. The South African government has stepped in and directly ordered operators to lower their costs by the end of November… and more.
