Time is running out for Ubuntu/Android project

Rating: NexPhone just needs $946,500 before mid-Nov

When Canonical first launched Ubuntu for Android at the MWC show back in February [2012], GoMobile News was quite intrigued. The idea of capitalising on the fact that the latest smartphones have dual core processors in order to run two different OS simultaneously was impressive. Of course, it is possible to run two different mobile OS on the same device – which is amply illustrated by HP’s TouchPad tablet. We run both the original OS – webOS, along with a version of Android from Cyanogenmod on our TouchPad. But not both simultaneously. With Unbuntu for Android, you can run a desktop OS (Ubuntu) and a mobile OS – Android, at the same time. The catch? As far as we can tell, the software isn’t user installable despite being Open Source based. So we’ve been waiting for a device manufacturer to implement it and that seems to be on the cards with the NexPhone from NexCrea. Continue reading

GoMo accidentally downloads ‘exclusive’ music app to HP TouchPad

Rating: Samsung had supposedly struck exclusive content deal

An exclusive deal has supposedly been struck between leading Android handset manufacturer, Samsung and mobile music specialist MusicQubed. The first handset to come with the Official Top 40 singles chart app preloaded will be Galaxy Ace II. However, this app is also available from Google Play here. When we tried to download it to a non-Galaxy phone the server said it was incompatible with all of our devices except the Cm_tenderloin. We clicked on that and suddenly realised the app had been sent to our HP TouchPad tablet running the Cyanogenmod version of Android. And, yup, it works, folks. Continue reading

Adding Google apps to Android on the H-P TouchPad

Rating: You end up with access to Google Play

Regular readers may recall that GoMobile News finally bit the bullet and installed a version of Android (4.0/Ice Cream Sandwich) on our HP TouchPad tablet here. Given H-P’s current woes, Android is obviously the future for H-P tablets. Anyway, for copyright reasons, GoMobile News didn’t install the full set of Google apps because legally it isn’t permitted. See our previous story here. Continue reading

HP blames smartphones and tablets for job cuts

Rating: Doing a Nokia and ignoring Android at its peril

It appears that Hewlett-Packard (H-P) is blaming its current misfortune on the rise of smartphones and tablets – such as the iPad. These have impacted sales of laptops for the world’s largest vendor of computers. GoMobile News isn’t surprise given the mess which current CEO, Meg Whitman (former CEO of eBay) inherited from her predecessor, Leo Apotheker. What is it with global market leaders? H-P appears to be ‘doing-a-Nokia’ and ignoring the Android OS. Which is bizarre given that even GoMobile News has been able to port Android onto its H-P TouchPad tablet. Continue reading

You can access Hotmail on a webOS device

Rating: Actually it’s quite easy once you know how

Although this advice was tested out on an HP TouchPad, we’ve got no reason to believe that it might not also work on an HP Pre 3 smartphone. GoMo News was astonished to discover that despite the close relationship between HP and Microsoft, the latter hasn’t bothered to introduce direct support for Hotmail/Windows Live Messenger (WLM) for the webOS platform. The problem appears to be that the WLM doesn’t recognise the webOS browser. We’ve also discovered that it is feasible to access your Hotmail messages via the native webOS client which also downloads your WLM contacts, too. Continue reading

How to install Kindle on a UK TouchPad

Rating: Beating the non-US block on a webOS device

It’s just like Google’s Music beta service which the search engine company is determined to restrict to US citizens only. For some reason Amazon in its infinite wisdom has decided not to allow non-US citizens to use the Kindle app on webOS devices. This seems to be despite the fact that the iOS and Android versions of the Kindle app are global. So GoMo News had to search for a way to beat this blocker. And thanks to a posting on Amazon’s own Kindle forum here, we’ve discovered a solution. This solution will cover installing other webOS apps which for some reason aren’t available via the HP App Catalog. It assumes you’re using a Windows based PC to install apps onto a webOS device. Mad rush for bargain HP Touchpads continues

Rating: Fandroids start Android port project

Bargain HP TouchPad tablet fever has hit the UK. Reports say that the price of this webOS device has been slashed by HP down to £89 for a 16GB model or £115 for the 32GB version. Reputedly, Dixons stores have already sold out of the devices whilst there could still be some stock in the DSG group‘s other arms – Currys and PC World. The drastic price decrease has inspired Fandroids to commence several projects to port Android onto this device. Hot places to look for such information include a new site – the TouchDroid project Wiki here. It might not be too difficult as there are whispers that Qualcomm has already built a version of Android which should easily port. The TouchPad has a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core APQ8060 processor. Continue reading

Update: Bottom falls out of HP TouchPad pricing

Rating: Has HP knocked £230 off the price?

Obviously HP wants to wash its hands of webOS as fast as possible because the company has kick started a fire sale of its TouchPad tablet in Canada. The Canadian store, Future Shop, had knocked C$300 off the price of the 16GB version – reducing the cost down to a mere C$99. When GoMo News checked here, the company had already run out of the bargain of the year. The obvious conclusion is that HP will replicate its tactics in the USA and the UK. We looked at the TouchPad page on Staples UK here and the company was still selling it for £291.35. We calculate that if Staples offered the same discount in the UK, that would price the tablet at £61. So that’s £230 off and the company was already claiming it had taken £41 off the price anyway. As an easy way to get your handset on webOs 3, nothing could beat that. Continue reading

Bid site predicts Android app work will catch iOS by 2013

Rating: Demand for RIM app developers has fallen dramatically

A web site that allows self-employed specialists to bid for projects – Freelancer.com – has been mining its data to gauge the health of the mobile app development sector. It claims the big loser is RIM/BlackBerry – despite the release of the PlayBook tablet. Significantly, the company says the growth rate for new iPhone applications is slowing whilst Google’s Android is enjoying a steady increase. The company predicts that Android will take the Number One position from Apple by Q1 2013. This information is taken from The Freelancer Fast 50 charts and key conclusions are drawn from almost 110,000 job postings in Q1 2011.  Although Freelancer.com does have a British arm, GoMo News wonders how much of this data is actually slewed towards the US market. HP pumps up webOS with new SDK

Rating: Something about millions of users

HP is doing its upmost to pump up the webOS which it bought from Palm to potential app developers. The first step has been to offer a webOS 3.0 SDK. It claims this has “everything you need to start developing apps for HP TouchPad and the next-generation of webOS devices.” Whoah! Plus – just to be on the safe side it has tidied up the web developers blog which GoMo News assumes it inherited from Palm. What’s behind the redesign? Here’s a clue … “We’ve made evangelism an integral part of the portal.” That word evangelism appears all over the place in the newly rejuvenated app developers blog here. What fascinates GoMo News, however, are the constant references to millions of users. Continue reading
