Americans now spend more time consuming media on mobile devices

Rating: InMobi confirms that women are keener mobile users when shopping

A US mobile media consumption report for Q2 2012 conducted by InMobi along with OnDevice Research provides some valuable insights into consumers’ behaviour. Some of it we could guess easily. For example, females access their mobile more than men while shopping (40 per cent vs 26 per cent). Der! But this one is the key point for the mobile advertising sector – Americans now spend more times consuming media on mobile devices that they do on TV. Out of the nine hours they spend in total consuming media, mobile is top with 2.4 hours, followed by TV (2.35 hours), and PCs (1.6 hours). More importantly, mobile advertising was found to be effective. The majority of US mobile users admit they’ve been introduced to something new via their mobile device (53 per cent) whilst 21 per cent ending up buying goods on their mobile device. Asda Mobile finds Brit men phone from the loo

Rating: Coins the terms throne call

Asda Mobile seems to think that the discovery that one in five men admit to regularly using their phones whilst in the smallest room [bathroom] is hot news. Well, the term ‘throne calls’ might be new but long standing mobile/cellular observers like GoMobile News have know of this habit for a very long time. Indeed, we remember such research coming out in WAP’s heyday [2000]. Better still, when BT more recently trialled mobile TV near to its research centre at Martlesham, it did its best to surpress the discovery that traillists regular watch TV on their smartphones whilst in the bathroom. There’s no electricity in the loo so it is an ideal solution. Asda’s research comes with some other equally long suspected conclusions, but at least the MVNOs has quantified it for us all with its poll. Continue reading

Formula One app for Sony TVs discovered by chance

Rating: Came across this Beeb app when researching connected TV

Chatting with Jim Somers, who is chief marketing and strategy officer, from Antenna Software, he let slip that if mobile/cellular is going to face a challenge in the future it will be from IP/connected TV. That challenge will especially apply when it comes to shares of the global advertising pie. GoMobile News had always assumed that IP TV is always allied to fixed broadband but Somers pointed out that that’s not necessarily the case. In rural areas connectivity could be supplied by some form of 4G – whether it’s LTE or WiMAX based. So whilst doing some background research, we discovered that the BBC has just announced the availability of a Formula 1 app for Sony TVs. Continue reading

Shazam for TV- a clarification

Rating: Why things didn’t quite work as planned

Regular readers will know that GoMobile News recently reported on our inability to join in a quest for London Olympics tickets courtesy of Cadbury (see here). We were testing out the first ever airing of ‘Shazam-for-TV’. This technology enables anyone with a suitably equipped handset to ‘tag’ an advert being aired on TV. We questioned exactly what had gone wrong and have received the following clarification from Cadbury’s representatives below. It makes very interesting reading. Continue reading

ITV airs first 2 Shazam for TV ads on UK’s BGT Final show

Rating: We’re hoping this isn’t another no-actual-winners TV scandal

Billed as the UK’s first Shazam-enabled ads, UK broadcaster, ITV, aired two adverts during the Britain’s Got Talent Final show last Saturday [12th May 2012]. GoMobile News isn’t sure how other viewers fared but the technology didn’t quite work for us. There were two ads involved: – one from soft drinks supplier, Pepsi and the other from confectionary supplier, Cadbury. Our problems could have stemmed from the fact that we were using a Nokia Lumia 800 (W7 Mango) handset. Such users surely represent a tiny minority of the over 10 million Shazam users in the UK. Another clue is that in the promotional blurb, says, “Make sure you have the latest version of Shazam, for the fastest tagging experience!”. Continue reading

Pets ousted by smartphone apps on Blue Peter

Rating: Iconic BBC kids TV gets update

This has got to be the best indication yet of how mobile phone apps have infiltrated every aspect of everyday life in the UK. A report in the Sunday Telegraph here outlines how an iconic UK children’s TV programme – the BBC’s Blue Peter – will feature smartphones and apps of interest to children. Apps will therefore displace TV footage of the programme’s array of pets including cats Socks and Cookie and Shelley the tortoise. According to Tim Levell, editor of the TV programme, “It is a big ask for cats to come to the studio every week. We want to feature them if editorially relevant, but cats don’t do what they are told, they are not biddable, they zoom off. But if we have a guest who loves cats, say, they might appear.” Continue reading

Spott app for Android & iOS film buffs

Rating: Will it show where the 39 steps are, though?

Here’s a novel use of location in a mobile app that works on the Apple iOS and Android platforms. It’s called Spott and aimed at film and TV buffs. The idea is that the app should help bring to live places (Spotts) where scenes from famous TV shows or films were filmed. Spott is something of a social app, too As a registered user you can become a ‘Spotter’, submitting your own Spotts and photos of yourself at new or existing Spotts. For once, however, you actually have to pay for this app £1.79. Continue reading

Your mobile device: phone, web browser… secret lover?
