Guest Post: Major differences between Android vs iPhone users

by Dixie Somers, a freelance writer who works sometimes with Apple Shark

In my opinion, in North America Android users are far more likely to be found in lower income areas, whereas middle and upper class regions tend to favour the iPhone. This can be put down largely due to the major price differences between the two. For example, an Android handset can easily be obtained for less than half the price of an iPhone. In addition, monetisation differences make Android apps much cheaper than iPhone equivalents. The price divide also creates a separation in price. Young college students generally have less money, thus they are grouped with the lower income Android users no matter what area they live in. Continue reading

Don’t stuff your phone down your bra researchers warn

Unless it’s a Nokia or an iPhone

Handsets releasing nickel and chromium are behind a huge surge in contact dermatitis, scientists believe. There’s been a massive increase – 1,250 per cent between 2000 and 2010 – in the number of cases involving contact dermatitis. And American and Danish researchers are pointing the finger squarely at smartphones. Particularly since the under18s are most affected. According to the boffins, the metals released by a large number of these devices can cause severe skin damage. Apparently, one young woman was the victim of a violent rash on her chest after keeping her phone in her bra. Bizarrely, previous researcher showed that only devices manufactured by Apple and Nokia does not release harmful metals. So be warned. Continue reading

Sshhh! It’s Secret Inc Secret app for iPhone

Social networking – only for those in USA

Here’s a new twist on social networking – an iPhone App called Secret which really does keep your identity secret. The idea appears to be to start wicked rumours with this app and then keep everyone guessing who actually let the cat out of the bag [started it]. The app is apparently the work of two former Google employees (calling themselves Secret Inc)– which makes it all the more puzzling that there’s currently no Android version of this app yet. There is an Android app called secret which is very similar but it isn’t the work of the same developer. The app is all the buzz in Silicon Valley but there’s a catch – at present you can only download this app if you’re based in the USA. Continue reading

USA’s FirstNet can save up to 40% in TCO over 10 years

Signals and Systems Telecom has issued a significant new report – ‘The Public Safety LTE & Mobile Broadband Market: 2014 – 2020′.

With spectrum already allocated, public safety agencies in the Middle East, Asia Pacific and the USA have already begun to operate private LTE networks. Driven by public safety demands, LTE products can now also operate in spectrum bands previously unthinkable, such as the 400 MHz band, which is widely available to public safety agencies worldwide – the report says. Cellular only 32% of data consumed on smartphones says Mobidia

However, 4G users are buying larger data plans

4G subscribers consumed dramatically larger amounts of data than 3G subscribers for the 100 plus MNOs [Mobile Network Operators] who have already installed LTE. However, Wi-fi continues to be a primary means of connectivity for smartphone subscribers, both 3G and 4G. Only 32% of data consumed on smartphones is via cellular. These are some of the crucial findings revealed in a White Paper entitled ‘Understanding Today’s Smartphone Users‘, created by Mobidia Technology, a leading provider of mobile usage data, in collaboration with Informa, a leading London-based analyst firm. The research indicates a positive impact for LTE ready MNOs. Despite the growing Wi-fi usage, 4G subscribers are buying larger plans. Continue reading

Acision predicts massive spike in MMS over Xmas

Popularity of ‘selfies’ and video sharing will add to traditional occasions

Thanks to the increasing popularity of ‘selfies’  (self-portrait by cameraphone) and video sharing, there will be a tremendous spike in MMS traffic over Xmas, global messaging specialist, Acision predicts. The company saw such spikes in MMS traffic, of up to 424 per cent, over the Xmas/New Year period in 2012 and 2013 will probably be worse.  Acision is therefore urging MNOs [Mobile Network Operators] to find ways of taking advantage of such increased activity.  For example, Acision’s research shows that 44 per cent  of respondents in the UK avoid sending MMS due to the high price compared to 19 per cent of US users. Mobile helped contribute to Black Friday & Cyber Monday sales

Mobile is growing but it hasn’t taken over quite yet

Just like us Brits have started observing Halloween when we ignored it pretty much for hundreds of years, all of a sudden we have ‘Black Friday’ and ‘ Cyber Monday’. Both have become crucial days for retails as they attempt to shift stock on the run up to Xmas. So our old friends 51Degrees.mobi have looked into how much mobile devices have influenced both mega-shopping days. The short answer is that – Yes, mobile devices have helped to bolster sales. But that haven’t taken over quite yet. What we do have, however, is some amazing stats from the likes of Amazon which reported sales for 2013′s Black Friday surging by some 43 per cent compared to 2012. It all makes for a pretty interesting CoTW (Chart ofThe Week). Continue reading
