Visa and Samsung have joined forces in a bid to accelerate user adoption of mobile money along with the take-up of NFC ‘tap-and-pay’ technology. The Visa Samsung global alliance signals the first of its kind between a leading NFC handset manufacturer and payment organisation. Under the deal, Samsung will preload Visa’s pay Wave app on to its NFC smartphones, making it easier for consumers and financial institutions to link their new handsets to their bank accounts. Monitise shares plunge 7% on news it wants to raise £100m
City nervous about why it wants extra cash
Shares in British mobile banking firm Monitise were down nearly 7 per cent in midday trading today [29th November 2012] after it emerged that it was hoping to raise up to £100 million from institutional and strategic investors. CEO, Alastair Lukies, said the proceeds would be used to fund new mobile banking and commerce opportunities for financial institutions and payment companies. He added that more than 18 million customers were now registered with its mobile money services, compared with 5.5 million this time last year. Continue reading

Many pundits seem to overlook the fact that Samsung has already stolen the mantle of the leading vendor of mobile phones from Nokia. Monitise reveals results of working with Visa & RBS

Mobile banking software specialist, Monitise, has made a number of announcements concerning the spread of its software in conjunction with its banking partners. One of them has been the results of collaboration with Visa to enhance its issuer processing platform, Visa DPS, to offer mobile services. Visa claims these can be accessed via any mobile device, any mobile channel, and with any eligible debit, credit or prepaid account. The other announcement covers the results of its partnership with RBS Group Technology Services. This has enabled RBS and NatWest to launch new mobile business banking apps. Basically, the group has been able to release a news iOS version of its banking app via the Apple iTunes App store. Continue reading

Google Wallet gets rolled out to Sprint Nexus S 4G owners

Having extensively tested it since the first announcement back in May [2011], Google has now rolled out the first version of the Google Wallet app to Sprint. It will become available to all owners of the Sprint Nexus S 4G via an OTA (Over-The-Air) update. The Wallet was trialled with three financial institutions – Citi, First Data and MasterCard. Now, Visa, Discover and American Express have made their NFC specifications available which will enable their cards to be added to future versions of Google Wallet. The Isis mobile payment offer from AT&T, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile USA has scaled back. If it hasn’t it should.
The WSJ broke the story that the ISIS venture that would make mobile operators in the US compete with the likes of Visa and Mastercard on mobile has scaled back. Instead of going head on with the mobile payment companies they have decided to create a mobile wallet. But then ComputerWorld said that this wasn’t true and the companies were becoming more open and that scaling back was not an option as the aim was never to become a bank.
