Thinking about porting your app to Android? You should go and talk to TapJoy, then, as they’ve just announced a $5 million fund to help developers transition their apps to the Google-owned platform.
What the hey?
Tapjoy is a performance-driven mobile advertising network for developers. It places ads within your application, from which both you and Tapjoy can generate revenue. Now it has announced a $5 million fund called the Tapjoy Android Fund – it offers both money and development support to those who wish take their existing apps/content and port it over to Android. This includes coding and testing services – as well as the option to integrate various Tapjoy products like analytics, virtual currency and marketing credits.
Mihir Shah, President and CEO of Tapjoy says “Tapjoy is in the business of democratizing the application ecosystem by bringing innovative content and targeted experiences to consumers while providing a level playing field for developers large and small to get their apps discovered. The openness and skyrocketing popularity of the Android platform makes it a perfect match for our long-term objectives. This new porting program will identify great apps and give them the opportunities they deserve.”
What we think?
Talk about planting your flag! Tapjoy is effectively offering to pay you to get onto Android. Of course, there’s revenue to be made in return; evidently Tapjoy has a lot of faith that Android is where the majority of money will be made from apps. And they may not be wrong, if yesterday’s report from Millennial Media is anything to go by. According to the most recent Mobile Mix report, the amount of revenue generated by iOS apps and Android apps is currently almost even (iOS is still slightly ahead). For Tapjoy, the more people advertising with them the better. So it makes sense for them to make it easier for developers to get onto Android – and get them onto Tapjoy in the process.
