Telefonica goes mobile barcode crazy
Rating: CEO of Scanbuy Mr. Jonathan Bulkeley has gone barcode mad. At the start of the year he sent me a picture of Times Square all barcoded and now Telefonica HQ in Spain.
Even though I am not the greatest fan of operator proprietary services – the extent of the pictures shows that operators realise that barcodes are the future and Telefonica hopes to lead.

I am still waiting for some stats though (from anyone, including Scanbuy) on the success of a mobile barcode campaign. People see barcodes but what is the awareness like? Do users know they have to take a picture? Or do they look for a barcode reader? (Don’t laugh, I have seen that happen)
To be fair, if any other barcode provides want to send me similar or indeed mobile operators – please do!
No favouritism on this site!

Unfortunately, Movistar’s barcode reader (Scanlife) only supports 40 handsets.

Unlike what happens everywhere in the World, France is for the moment the only place in the world where telcos are tryng to lock-up the barcode technology.
It’s amazing that in 2008 people can still think of such enourmous bullshits…
Having said this, the 3 french operators are still in the phase of analyzing the pros and the cons, and the Mobiletag contract is not signed.
SFR-Vodafone has decided not to adhere to the locked-up barcode model, which means that half of the french market is open.
Waiting for the other half to understand where the real value addes is…

Comment made on January 29th, 2008 at 3:08 amIf you’re still looking for results from a mobile bar code campaign, check out slide 20 of this deck: http://www.slideshare.net/swamicrm/mobile-marketing/
Adidas got over 60,000 people to scan the codes during a trial run in Korea, and got over 2,000,000 page views of the associated WAP site.
I’m not sure these results speak to the specific questions you ask about how users engage with QR codes — but they do speak to the general fact that people (at least in Korea..) can figure out how to engage with them.
The rest (as with any marketing tactic) seems to hinge on the particular execution of the campaign.
Hope that’s helpful.
