MACH
is a clearing and settlement partner for mobile based transactions. Telefonica Spain is using MACH’s Data Express Fraud Protection solution to achieve Near Real Time Roaming Data Exchange (NRTRDE). MACH will monitor against roaming fraud.

From the press release
Manuel Franco, Director of Revenue Assurance & Fraud at Telefónica Spain commented; “MACH has one of the most advanced NRTRDE & Fraud Protection solutions available. As MACH provides Clearinghouse services & NRTDE to other Telefónica Group members as well as other leading global operator Groups it has for both solutions, the right level of expertise to combat roaming fraud.”

As Lodewijk Cornelis, Head of New Sales & Marketing at MACH
comments,
“With MACH Data Express and MACH Fraud Protection, Telefónica benefits from a fully comprehensive solution against roaming fraud. The operator will have early visibility of roaming subscriber activity and data intelligence and a global view with fraud ‘fingerprint’ matches across all networks. MACH also has a specialist ‘rapid responsive’ fraud protection unit with 24/7/365 surveillance, detection and monitoring of suspicious behaviour. MACH acts as the watch tower and has the capabilities to instantly shut-down roaming fraud.”

What we think?
Roaming fraud is a huge problem – as is fraud with mobile data and voice services in general. Steps are being taken to solve the problem, but culprits get clever. For example; a few years ago I met a GSM hacker. I was interviewing for a white paper I was writing at the time. He knew some code to type into any handset so that the sending of SMS abroad was hidden for the next ten minutes.

He also alluded to the fact that it was possible to buy goods when roaming and then immediately take out the SIM and hold it for 20 minutes and then put it into a new device. The old device would somehow have the acknowledgement of the purchase. Customer care would send out the file or data again and both devices would then get the same content. At this time the consumer would “change his/her mind” and get refunded – with one of the content purchases still on one device.
