Telefonica Yahoo!

Yahoo! finally has a deal with a pan-European operator. It has been desperate for one for over a year now. It got a bunch of deals in May in Asia and said its subscriber base was 100 million in the press release. BKI Media did some digging and actually all the subscribers in that region only equated to 70 million subscribers.

No one else bothered to check the facts… but we did!

Why is it important? Well. The race for mobile search leadership is on and Yahoo! is playing catch-up and wants to milk any sale or solution.

What we think?
Well done Yahoo! We know what its like to sometimes be second best when the solution is far superior to the incumbent! But seriously, it’s a free for all and a competitive gambit.

Yahoo! was first on 3 – but now Google is also on.

Yahoo! was first with Nokia. Now Nokia is in bed with Windows and is up for anything else it can get.
Yahoo! was is now first on Telefonica and this marks a change for the company (inc. O2) that have prided themselves on being white label, independent and also the mobile data leaders across the UK in terms of users. Me thinks this has more to do with the ODP space and the integration of Active into the idle screen more than anything else.

Only last week JumpTap is also the white label provider in Spain on Telefonica. Although I haven’t seen this yet – I will be testing it at the end of next week and more then.
