Telenor Research and Innovation has launched a mobile client on Facebook where users can join the network community. The client enables access to Facebook and allows instant messages and the chance to upload content from the mobile device.
From the press release:
Through the use of open source software, the mobile Facebook client will be further developed through feedback and experience so that later versions will be more robust, with improved user interface and functionality. Initially, the beta version has been tested on a limited number of mobile terminals.
“Our target is to learn more about how we can create value and increase service innovation together with other players in our value system, including the end users,” says Hilde Lovett, Project Manager in Telenor R&I.
Personal mobile clients
iLabs, (innovation Labs) a newly established initiative from Telenor R&I, has developed a set of APIs and demonstrators based on open source, called the iLabs Mobile Toolbox. By using this toolbox, users can make their own mobile clients and participate in various network communities and blogs from the mobile terminal. Integration has also been done with Blogger, EZ Publish and Google Talk.
What we think
This is great. We love Facebook (check out benaroberts) and these types of applications are necessary for mobile convergence with the Internet and to drive data adoption. Facebook is also a great example of a true community that if it does make waves on mobile – the potential of mobile services might actually be realised. Saying this there was some gossip that Google is after Facebook. Fingers crossed Facebook shuns Google as it did Yahoo!
