Telmap moves Navigator app onto Android
Rating: Can’t ignore ” fastest growing smartphone OS” any longer
Mobile satnav specialist, Telmap, has introduced a version of
Telmap Navigator for Android. The reason being that it is responding to a prediction from Current Analysis that Android is “the fastest growing smartphone operating system in 2009.”
According to the Press blurb, the first customer for this Android version is Orange. So, presumably, this will be running on the HTC Hero. Other Tier One operators are to follow.
The good news is that the software is available immediately on Orange and is free as long as you are on one of Orange’s Top Five (most expensive) tariffs.
Telmap CEO’ Oren Nissim, says that, “The high performance of the Android powered phones … provides an advanced user experience in mobile navigation and location-based applications.”
Telmap’s objective is to provide all kinds of GPS-enabled services to be delivered through a single package. So it covers all kinds of routing information (vehicle and pedestrian) as well as local search.
Indeed, amongst the capabilities highlighted in Telmap Navigator for Android is the ‘Place Carousel’ which is a selection of on-map widgets.
These widgets relate to popular business categories like hotels and cafes and help locate local points of interest though a ‘Tap ‘n’ View search’ facility.
In addition to Android, Telmap Navigator already runs on the iPhone, BlackBerry, Symbian, BREW, and Windows Mobile OS. Shame there’s no Java version, though.
