Text is bigger than Internet search
Rating: MEF chairman gets controversial @ OMA World
by Tony Dennis
There were so highly amusing moments, here at the OMA World event being held In a London hotel on the Edgeware Road. But Patrick Parodi, chairman of the MEF [Mobile Entertainment Forum] got pretty controversial during his pitch on the importance of the mobile entertainment industry.
He showed some pretty impressive slides which amongst other things illustrated that the mobile sector is already four times bigger in terms of paid-for content than the fixed Internet equivalent.
A personal favourite, however, was when Parodi compared computer Google search to text messaging.
He claimed that there are more texts sent in the UK along than there are Goggle searches performed on a global basis. That’s because every second in the UK, there are some 4,000 text messages sent every second.
Another statistic was that the mobile sector now grabs 40 per cent of all digital music sales worldwide. Considering how user hostile the mobile world is compared to the likes of iTunes, that’s impressive.
Parodi also showed some impressive slides on how the MEF’s members view AFME (Ad-Funded Mobile Entertainment]. 80 per cent think it’s going to be a good thing.
There was even a great question from the floor when one attendee pointed out how it’s very difficult for a standards body like the OMA to cater for the needs of the entertainment and advertising sectors when there are no delegates from the ad industry.
The reply was that if the OMA continued to hold its meetings in a ‘dungeon’ rather than somewhere a bit more glamourous, that trend isn’t going to change.
