The GSMA HSPA round table at CTIA the future of mobile broadband

by: Bena Roberts Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

I was delighted to be invited to an invite only GSMA round table at CTIA on mobile broadband. I am not the guru on broadband I thought it would be a great learning opportunity and it was. I have to say, I think that I might need to learn a bit more as when it going the discussion about uplink, downlink and 7.2 down express port card (good grief) did confuse me – but I was too afraid to say anything as everyone else knew what was going on.

Members were:
Bill Gajda – CMO GSMA USA
Hank Kafka – VP Network Architecture AT&T
Hugh S. Bradlow – Chief Technology Officer Telstra Corporation Limited
Edward Evans – CEO & Co Founder Stelera Wireless
Alex Katouzian – VP Qualcomm CDMA Technologies
Jeanette Fridberg – Director Product Marketing PARAN Ericsson

But, what I did understand is when Telstra’s Hugh Bradlow started talking about broadband in Australia. In fact, he made me hiccup in shock, when he declared that

“conversion to 3G in 16 months had been as high as 38% for consumers.

Also there had been a $20 uplift in ARPU as a result”.

But it gets better.

Telstra is making more dollars from 3G now that it is from SMS. He said, this might be one of the only examples of this and it’s the first time that I have heard that.

I recorded a bit on a MP3 and I also took a short live video of the panel – so more after CTIA.
