The Carphone Warehouse is launching its own branded mobile navigation service and its powered by Telmap. The first application will be available on the BlackBerry Curve 8310 device.

From the Press release
“Working alongside The Carphone Warehouse is an exciting direction for Telmap” said Oren Nissim, CEO of Telmap. “The Carphone Warehouse is the biggest wireless retailer in Europe , and this partnership stands to represent the increasing number of people who will now have access to navigation via their mobile phone during their everyday lives.”

“With the recent furore surrounding the importance of mobile features such as games, music and photography, our customers tells us that satellite navigation is now also a must have application,” commented George Dymond, UK Trading Director from The Carphone Warehouse. “Our own-branded application will enable us to make the most advanced experience in mobile navigation available to our nationwide customer base.”

What we think?

This will work if it is downloadable for free at shops for all devices and all existing customers with sub charges enforced only after extensive use. The problem is that navigation is getting hot but everyone is doing it and competing will be tough unless it is used as more of a value add retention offer than the hope of a new cash cow.
