Toshiba has announced it’s new device, the Toshiba TG01. And boy is it pretty. With a higher screen resolution and slimmer body than the iPhone, the multimedia-focused touchscreen device will be available across Europe in Summer 2009. The TG01 is the first mobile device that will us Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset.

The Snapdragon processor is designed for high-power and speed. There’s certainly a lot of features integrated directly onto the chip. 1GHz computing, multimedia processing, built-in GPS and high-speed 3G connectivity are all on a single chip. Nevertheless power consumption is still very reasonable, with talk time of about five hours and stand-by of eleven days.
The touch-screen uses Toshiba’s proprietary UI. Some of the gestures work without using the screen, which is a nice touch. For example, you can answer the phone by shaking it – although that might lead to more accidentally calls than before.

What we think?
There are still remarkably little details on this device outside of the technical bits. There’s no price details, or news about what mobile operators will be carrying it. Based entirely on the above, though, it does look very good. It certainly lives up to all of the functionality of the iPhone, and comes in slimmer and with higher screen-res as well. Will that be enough, though? Fast processing and rapid access to the mobile Internet is definitely important, but the price of the device and it’s contract will decide a lot about it’s future. Best to hold on to judgment until after more details emerge at the MWC!
