Rating: shut up and find me

by Bena Roberts

Its been a really long and stressful day. So I sit down with a glass of Champagne in the Reval Hotel in Latvia and check the wires for some blogs I have missed and what has been read on GoMo.

This press release from TruePosition has been pushed to me in my in box by three different PR agencies and one online wire. I think to myself; this must be hot. So I start reading it.

Truepostion an LBS player unveils a study undertaken by IDC on the LBS opportunity in the US. I have now finished reading it and my initial conclusion is “oh dear”.

The study focuses on: Child Monitoring, Medical and Senior Citizen Monitoring, Pet Tracking, Navigation, Traffic, Stolen Vehicle Recovery, Social Networking, Local Search, Fleet Tracking, and Workforce Management.

So that is the first problem – nothing is new. LBS vendors have been pushing the crap since 2001. Even three years ago I wrote an article on how social networking would revolutionise LBS as mobile yoof discover each other.

Three years on with mobile phones being banned in the classroom and more are being stolen than ever before the LBS social networking dream hasn’t been born. (I am sure this isn’t only in the UK).

I feel sorry for TruePosition as they have obviously spent a lot of money on this – but the fact of the matter is that the market isn’t ready for LBS and growth is slow and will be slow and will continue to be slow until interaction and not bloody technology moves up on the consumer facing agenda.
