UpCode USA Response to CTIA Mobile Barcode Paper and Registry

by: Bena Roberts Friday, September 19th, 2008

Bena we love the fact that CTIA are trying to do something in bar coding space and we respect them highly. But UpCode’s point of view is that we will always help CTIA in any and every way possible to jump start the USA market but we feel the registry is not the way to go. This type of system has been tried several times in other markets and has failed. Why would it work here?  We believe that there are other ways of dealing with this issue, besides a registry.

UpCode is now in 43 countries and pushing, we focus on global solutions that cater to many vertical markets. The truth of the matter is 2d barcodes give any and everyone who uses these codes a global distribution platform no matter where they are.The question is…… how do you monetize?

Well UpCode has shown this by being strategic and creating alliances with real world solutions, not just physical world hyper-links. UpCode has proven that we can work together with carriers in other countries and share in revenue without a registry, this is what is working now. Right now UpCode has deals with many carriers and has created revenue generated models that makes carriers and advertisers happy, including coming up with the UpCode DeCode feature for those handsets that can’t scan so the carriers subscribers can still participate by using a regular camera phone. Example…

UpCode started in the the Philippines with Nestle and the carriers with a campaign called “Alien” this was the first campaign in the Philippines and it was 200% over its mark, even the carriers were amazed on how receptive the people were to UpCode. This campaign also won a award from IMMAP “The Internet & Marketing Association”.

Furthermore, in Argentina with Bidi Codes powered by UpCode has took a amazing leap with Telefonica delivering music using UpCodes and creating a new revenue model for them. This proves cooperation between carriers and barcode companies can work we just need to show them how they can monetize from it.
What the codes need is more marketing and ideas It is ridiculous to base any standard on proprietary codes. This white paper is truly not open to multiple player’s or competitive to others. UpCode challenges it and will also will be responding officially to the CCSAT on this issue.

Question for Jerald:

It was commented on GoMo News that AT&T has selected NeoMedia to be their supplier of Data Matrix codes here in the US.

http://streetstylz.blogspot.com/2008/09/at-papa-johns-team-up-with-neomedia.html

As the CEO of UpCode USA, and a strong supporter of the Data Matrix symbology, I was wondering if I could get your thoughts.

Thanks & regards

:)

I will not be like the other CEO’s and talk smack to each other for what I will show and prove.I feel many of thee guys need to concentrate on the market rather than attack each other it makes them look so silly.Aren’t these grown men? There are to many egos and not enough marketing and creativity thats why I was brought to UpCode.Alot of people don’t know this but I was part of Scanbuy a few years ago and had my own brand but we could not see eye to eye so I walked “different visions”.I’m a marketer and I love what I do but lets be honest this is a youthful product the kids will train the adults and the fact is if you dont drink it, drive it or use it how can you market it. :)

@ Jerald

Recall what you said on the PP Blog:

Jerald Cavitt said…

“Interesting well we all knew it would come back to haunt them for all the companies they bothered and threatened. All they had to do is do it the right way and be strategic like the others.”

Jerald Cavitt said…

“Well the truth is the battle will be between Upcode and Scanbuy they will battle for the market place who will win time will tell. But you all wanna here something funny why is the X CEO of NEO media calling to align with UpCode hmmmm he must think that his X comapny Neo will loose the battle. There is a right way and a wrong way and obviously they did it wrong. It’s about Globalization and who succeeds to get that space will win in the end like how we are in 42 countries with 10 million users and counting.”

————————————————-

Jerald, according to your statements, it doesn’t appear you believe NeoMedia will be a player in this emerging mobile code ecosystem. You seem to think the battle will be between UpCode and Scanbuy.

However, with AT&T selecting NeoMedia to be their supplier of Data Matrix codes here in the US, I tend to beleive that NeoMedia will in fact be a very significant player in this ecosystem.

Wouldn’t you agree?

@Streetstylz,

You start a rumor on your blog, then you post it here and ask others what their opinion of the rumor is. When they respond assuming the rumor is fact, then you use that to validate your rumor as factual.

Again, do you or anyone posting this myth have anything from ATT that confirms your statement, or are you still just making that assumption based on their participation in a Pappa Johns Trial.

If the trial is all you have to go on, then its quite disingenuous for you to go around claiming ATT has made a decision for their future bar code needs based on a very limited trial?

Yes I read the IHUB posts suggesting that ATT offered 5.00 to participants for their feed back. Funny thing is all the information about contacts to that request was omitted so the info could not be verified by a working web site of ATT. And because they are offering incentive for feed back to guage how the trial went, still in no way is confirmation they have selected one company or another to provide their future codes.

Matter of fact your blog entry on this subject was copied from another blog, after you pleaded with someone to find you a copy of the coupon, and this blog entry differs greatly from the Neomedia press release on the subject which doesn’t mention AT&T at all.

Just an answer to the question with a link that supports your claim will be a sufficient response please. Otherwise we can assume there is no evidence to your claim that AT&T has selected anyone for their future bar code needs.

I started a rumor on my blog? WTF are you talking about? What rumor did I start on my streetstylz blog? Please show me where.

I asked Jerald:

“It was commented on GoMo News that AT&T has selected NeoMedia to be their supplier of Data Matrix codes here in the US.”

He replied:

“You asked me what I have to say about AT&T and NeoMedia nothing but congratulations”

If untrue, perhaps Jerald would have stated as such. Instead he offered his congratulations. Perhaps he can clarify this rumor as to whether it is true or not.

I am glad to see you read the post on iHub confirming AT&T sent out an email survey asking for feedback on the Papa John’s NeoMedia trial.

Obviously this is not enough proof for you, so how about you click on this link:

http://att.inquisiteasp.com/cgi-bin/qwebcorporate.dll?idx=AM2KN7&rk=8563180255

OMG, it takes you to an AT&T / Papa John’s website.

And for the record brewskih, I can write whatever the f*ck I want on my blog and don’t you forget that!

:P

I have never had anything against NeoMedia I just the play the game. But the truth is I was harassed by them when I had my XxScan and XxCode brand that was powered by Scanbuy at that time.I hold no grudges because neither of us UpCode, ScanBuy or NeoMedia will be able to say which reader the people will use they will choose on their own and thats a fact. There is enough room for all three so what is the fuss and fights for?We all have a job to do so just do it.Lets be honest do anyone think that any carrier in the USA is gonna do any exclusives with any 2d company that hasn’t proven usage and users?Come on who are these guys trying to fool sure not me. We all have the same problem getting people to download our softwares that should be the focus.Well that is UpCodes focus is getting more users from around the globe and creating compelling solutions not just hyperlinks.

@Streetstylz,

Yes you started the rumor. You stated as you acknowledge that it was mentioned on GOMO news, and then you included the link to your blog spot where the mention originated from. If thats not you starting the rumor then WTF.

Again I asked you for any proof that AT&T selected Neomedia for their future bar code needs, and the best you can come up with is another link to their participation in the PAPPA JOHNS LIMITED TRIAL.

We all know they were a part of that trial, and it does not say a thing about how they will acquire future codes now does it? Is Sprint getting their codes freom Neomedia because they participated in a CASE WESTERN trial with Neomedia and Case Western University? Did AT&T ask Neomedia to provide the codes or did Pappa Johns? From the sound of the Neomedia press release it was a Neomedia and Pappa Johns trial since AT*T isn’t mentioned at all in the official press release. Sounds to me like Pappa Johns recruited AT&T.

So again, do you have any other information that supports your claim that AT&T has chosen Neomedia to supply it with its bar codes in the future(DATA MATRIX I BELIEVE YOU STATED).

Please show me where on my blog I mentioned AT&T has selected NeoMedia to be their supplier of Data Matrix codes here in the US.

News flash brewskih, it was NEVER mentioned on my streetstylz blog.

This rumor was mentioned on GoMo news by another poster. I simply took that information and asked Jerald Cavitt for his thoughts. I was curious to see if he had heard anything.

So I guess we will just have to wait and see how this plays out with NeoMedia, AT&T, and Data Matrix codes.

@Streetstylz,

Come on now. There are only two posters who have ever created a new screen name which linked back to Neomedia’s web site. You used to do that to suggest to readers you were a part of Neomedia. When called on it and your remarks suggesting the same, using words like “WE” etc. you responded that you are a part of the company because you own stock in it…..LOL. I think you know who the second poster is, and he has nearly dissappeared until recently, so perhaps the NEO poster is he and not you, but last I knew you two were great buds.

As for what you asked, that is a joke. You made a statement as though the rumor were fact, and then asked what he thought of that information you were supplying, then included the link to your pappa johns blog for him to go to as reference.

If you wanted to find out whether he had heard anything about the RUMOR to confirm it or deny it, why not just ask out simply, instead of the play on words you used suggesting it was a fact A simple “have you heard anything about the rumor posted on gomo” would have alerted him that he was being asked to opine on the rumor. I would bet his response would of been a lot different then.

If someone started that same rumor but said I had got chosen to provide AT&T their data matrix codes, his response probably would of been the same, congratulating me on the news, because when its stated as you did, its believed to be factual.

But you go even further then that, yet you claim you were just trying to find out if he had heard anything. Again right in this thread, you state it again as though its fact at the bottom of another one of your responses, and yet when asked to collaborate it with anythingt substantial, all you do is go off subject to deter the topic.

I AM STILL WAITING FOR YOU TO PROVIDE SOMETHING THAT COLLABORATES THIS RUMOR which you are spreading with comments like this. He never confirmed the rumor or even commented whether he heard anything or not, just offered congratulations which is a typical response. matter of fact his next response to you suggests that he does not believe any carrier has enetered any exclusive deals with anyone of the players, especially those who have not proved themselves. And we both know to this date Neomedia has not proved itself.

“”"”"”"However, with AT&T selecting NeoMedia to be their supplier of Data Matrix codes here in the US, I tend to beleive that NeoMedia will in fact be a very significant player in this ecosystem.

Wouldn’t you agree?

It was deleted because if Scanbuy thought gomo news was a good blog or important they would talk to me and tell me the news. I dont know anything about it and if you want to give free publicity without paying EUR 20 for our PR service - please do it on your own blog. Dont do it on one I have built.
