Verizon announced today that massively successful music producer Timbaland will be creating exclusive content for the Blackberry Storm. Timbaland will be pairing with musical artists to create music which will be free for download to customers from Research In Motion. The first song to be released on the service will be a remix of the Rihanna song “Rehab.”
From the release:
“The BlackBerry Storm features impressive multimedia capabilities, including support for V CAST Music, making it easy for our customers to listen to and enjoy music on the smartphone. The BlackBerry Storm continues to be a hit with customers, and we’re excited to bring them exclusive music from Timbaland and other top artists,” said Ed Ruth, director of digital music at Verizon.
“The opportunity to create exclusive music for the BlackBerry Storm with some of the most talented artists in the industry is something I’m really looking forward to,” said Timbaland. “The upcoming events will touch thousands of fans across the country and reach millions more through mobile technology. Bringing people together through my music is what I was born to do.”
What we think?
Mobile music is going to become a much bigger presence in 2009. With basically free music services like nuTsie and Nabbit hitting smartphones, I’m guessing that Verizon felt it needed draw attention back to the old V Cast music service. If that’s what it was trying, it hasn’t really done very well. Exclusive, unique content for mobile users is a great idea. But exclusive content for users of just on one type of Blackberry is less great. Especially seeing as the most recent nuTsie release was also for the Storm, and it’s a lot better than this. Not only that, but the initial song offering isn’t the best – a remix of a single that’s already several months old isn’t exactly exciting.
