Verizon to become Open Network
Rating: Woo hoo…!
They say: According to the folks over at The Mobile Weblog Verizon are moving towards running an Open Network. By the end of 2009 Verizon will allow outside devices and applications to run on it’s network.
Verizon have said any mobile device that complies with the CDMA (code division multiple access) will be able to connect to their network and that any application installed on a compliant device will also be able to run on their network. Verizon also announced that the first device they have certified will operate on it’s Open Development Network from Friday.
We say: This is great news and the way forward. Never mind what network you signed up with or which handset you are using today, you should be able to just connect to the best service available based on signal coverage and other services you require at that point. This really is a step forward in breaking the traditional operator/handset model the industry has been built on.
