Rating: Branson helps the planet out of a pickle and GoGreenMo

Virgin Mobile, sister brand of one of the world’s biggest airline companies, has just announced that it’s popular US-based music festival is going to try ever so hard to keep it clean.  The festival organisers are working with a consultancy run by mermaid Daryl Hannah to make sure the event has a minimal impact on the environment, this means using recyclable materials and renewable energy throughout.

From the press release:

“It is so wonderful to see Virgin Mobile taking its impact on the environment seriously,” reports Daryl Hannah. “By supporting the many solutions available, Virgin Festival By Virgin Mobile is taking care of nature while also serving as a model for other event producers. Living Green isn’t nearly as hard as it might seem, and it’s actually a lot of fun once you get going!

What we think:
Modern technology companies, flanked by wheelbarrows full of advertising money, have worked hard to position themselves as pivotal forces in the advancement of the human state. However, it is a mathematical fact that if you combine the amount of power it takes the average person to check their Facebook every day and fully charge their E65, you have enough energy to power Sudan’s second smallest town for 13 years.

The serious point here is that technology companies, from network operators to Darren in his garage with his strip poker website, are contributing to the planet’s rapid consumption of materials and creation of waste.  As technology becomes more and more ingrained in people’s everyday lives so their desire for energy and disposable consumer goods increases, so surely it is the responsibility of these companies to raise awareness.

Initiatives like this can only be a good thing. Virgin Mobile makes more than enough money to cover their bar bill (and everyone else’s) so why shouldn’t they use some of this clout to help make sure the planet is around for a while longer?
