Rating: Music plus video is the way to go
by Tony Dennis

It’s becoming increasingly obvious that Player X is one of the mobile industry’s rising stars. First it manages to co-brand the prestigious
Nokia party at the forthcoming MWC. Now it’s announced a tie up with Virgin
Mobile
.
According to X’s Monty Munford this is a unique deal in the industry. Player X
now will source not only all of Virgin Mobile’s games but it will also liaise
with content providers to bring all video content to Virgin Mobile.
I notice there’s a mention of  ‘ adult’
comedy mobile video in the announcement, too.

Now this is exactly the way I feel things are going. You should ally video to
other forms of mobile content. Curiously it was on this very point that I
differed with Pascal Grieson of Cliq/UBC the other day.
Grieson was very persuasive on how easy it would be to cross sell other
products when enticing in consumers through the Cliq music locator service.
He was very positive about cross-selling concert tickets and T-shirts alongside
single music tracks. But music videos weren’t an area of focus for him right
now.
I think that’s abig mistake because one of the things that UK mobile operator, 3, does very well is sell music videos to subscribers. I found
3 UK’s move to launch a UK video download chart show on dance music station, Kiss
100, very astute indeed.
There’s an opportunity for both Virgin Mobile and Cliq to muscle in on a high
profile chart like the Kiss 100 one. Perhaps it would even stop Armand van Helden
from topping the chart so often.
