Vodafone buys Alltel

by: Bena Roberts Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Vodafone has bought the US operator Alltel for USD 28.1 bn

What we think?

Hmmm. Looking at Mobile Search first - this means that JumpTap can claim Vodafone as a client.

Staying with search - Vodafone Verizon has had an agenda with every mobile search operator - which now includes Motricity and Medio.

Looking at everything else - Vodafone is going for domination in the US.

Bena, read the press release again. Verizon Wireless is buying Alltel, not Vodafone. VZW is a joint venture between Verizon (55%) and Vodafone (45%), operated by Verizon.

And as always, it’ll be months before this deal passes goverment approval and closes. Your getting quite a bit ahead of yourself on the conclusions…

Michael, Yes - I wrote that a bit quickly yesterday. With regards to Vodafone going for domination I heard from Vodafone that the plan for 100% ownership in every country was back on the agenda. This was the plan about 5 years ago when Voda had stakes in Switzerland (not just the partnerhship with Swisscom) and also more of a presence in Austria. But the company backed out to focus on a different strategy.

Me - as usual forgot to say all of that. But if that is the new strategy -bye bye VZW and it will be Vodafone sooner rather than later.

I’ve heard that strategy as well, however the USA is a bit different. The repetitive rumor here has always been Verizon buying out Vodafone, not the other way around. Two years ago, Vodafone did in fact big in AT&T Wireless but lost our to Cingular. They’ve occationally been rumored to offer to buy T-Mobile USA from Deutche Telekom. And if they want a 100% owned American operating company, they are welcome today to buy Sprint.

The problem for Vodafone in the USA is that AT&T and T-Mobile are the only two significant GSM operators. Verizon, Sprint, Alltel, USCellular, MetroPCS, Virgin, and Leap are all CDMA. Until everyone has an LTE phone, that’s a big hurdle toward an worldwide interoperable Vodafone network which includes the USA.
