Vringo and Universal sign trial video ringtone licensing agreement

This is just a trial but its also a big step for Vringo. Universal Music Groups has signed an agreement to deliver video ringtones.
What does this mean?
Well basically instead of caller back tunes where you hear the ringtone – this will allow consumers to view the a video before they pick-up. Initially, Vringo was about user generated content only – so a consumers own video… but now with Universal on board more popular tunes by artices such as Rihanna can be chosen.
From the press release“The Universal Music Group videos being delivered to Vringo customers showcase the world’s most popular artists and musicians, performing their landmark hits,” said Rob Wells, senior vice president–Digital, Universal Music Group International. “We’re pleased to make our artists available to an even wider and more connected worldwide audience through this service.”
“Vringo is proud to be able to include Universal Music Group’s content in the Vringo catalogue,” said Jon Medved, Vringo CEO. “It will give subscribers access to some of the most compelling and popular material in the world today. We expect Universal Music’s content to strongly resonate with the Vringo user base.”
What we think
Signing up popular brands and artists is a good move for Vringo. Even though user generated mobile content is huge – often users want to chose which friends see personal content and a generic ringtone for everyone is also needed. Universal can fill this gap.
