What Deutsche Telekom needs to learn from the end of Siemens Mobile
Rating: Go Rene! Go Rene!
by Bena Roberts

I am in Germany and have been watching the TV, listening to interviews and following the strike action of DT employees. Not everyone is going to like this – but here is my take.
1. At last weeks talk to the employees of DT – Rene Obermann got “boos” from the crowd.
2. He said that T-Mobile might have to get sold if things didn’t change.
3. He still got boos…
What on earth?
1. DT employees have had it good for a long time.
2. Six to eight weeks holiday a year.
3. Short working times and great canteen food!
4. Even the pay is not that bad. (Yes I know the EURO story and all that)
But some people are never happy.
1. Germans are living in or hanging on to the good old days when life was good. The Deutsche Mark ruled and the Berlin Wall was firmly in place.
2. DT employees have been spoilt for so long they don’t know what is good for them.
3. DT is losing clients – 100,000 this past quarter.
4. Competition in Germany is the most aggressive ever.
5. How can DT keep low working hours – increase pay and remain competitive?
DUH!?
1. Siemens was in the same position.
2. Siemens Mobile got sold – now it and Benq is no more.
3. Loads of people lost their job.
4. Should we ask them if they would have preferred slightly longer working hours or waiting in the dole queue?
Stop complaining and start working. With six weeks holiday a year – everyone in DT is already doing better than their EU neighbours. Life is tough; but it’s tougher when you haven’t got a job.
I like Rene Obermann –but I think that he needs to get even tougher. He is good – but the time is now to start showing the German people how good they have got and by citing examples of the “worst case scenario”.
