Rating: Got WIND? Get it messaged better

by Tony Alton

WIND, the Italian mobile/Internet/fixed-line provider has today announced it will roll out Critical Path’s latest, shiniest and doubtlessly most expensive new consumer messaging solution, Memova Messaging 8.0 (gets whites whiter than ever before).  When WIND get home and open the box, which claims to offer the latest web 2.0 technology, they will be able offer the 12 million active users of their Libero portal a bunch of new features.

From the press release:
"As the leading email provider and Internet portal in Italy, we are committed to staying on the cutting edge of technology," said Antonio Converti, Libero.it marketing director. "Memova Messaging allows us to provide the most advanced Web mail features available today, and it ensures that we can offer the best and most easy-to-use email experience for our subscribers. We are pleased to roll out these enhancements on our Libero portal."

What we think:
Version 8.0? NO WAY!!!! 12million people? GADZOOKS!!! Web 2.0 email experience? CRIKEY!!!! What are these seemingly groundbreaking new social email features I hear you roar?  Erm, well, auto-complete address fields (automatic address putty inny thing) dynamic updates (automatic inbox refreshy thingy) and right-click menus (errr, well right click menus).  If users are well-behaved and don’t cause trouble then Memova Messaging also promise to think about providing some other fairly generic services further down the line, such as VOIP integration, but to be honest nothing that’s going to crease Bill Gates’ pyjamas.

To the people using the Libero portal this might be a nice little extra, but the cliché ‘Web 2.0’ claim just seems vastly exaggerated for something which is essentially a fairly generic email upgrade, with features that Outlook users have had for quite some time. The fact that buried right at the foot of the press release is the statement that this is only a limited beta, which is not available to everyone until the end of 2007, also leaves me feeling cheated, used and left on the floor like Natalie Imbruglia after a bad date.
