Wine with Miles Spencer VauxLesVentures Angel Investor in M3Mob, Mo’Jiva and Cellufun

by: Bena Roberts Sunday, June 29th, 2008

I was introduced to Miles Spencer (VauxLesVentures) a few months ago by another investor. All I knew before I met him was that he “invests in hot mobile companies and works really hard”.

So I just expected a normal meeting and chat when I scheduled a meeting with Miles in London. We met at the Mayfair and he walked me to a lovely little restaurant around the corner. He said, I often have breakfast here and it’s really lovely.

He wasn’t joking. We arrived in Automat. It is a US diner style restaurant that is very hip and exclusive. I had a quick look at the menu and the breakfast was the first thing I saw. Now, I nearly had a heart attack. It was GBP 80. Just for breakfast! OMG. I looked at Miles and shrieked. He smiled and me and said, “just order a drink – don’t look at the prices!”.

I did just that and ordered a lovely glass of Rose wine.

So then we got down to business. I wanted to know about all of the investments he had made. Why mobile and which investments got him excited.  Miles thinks that mobile is the future. He is a tech geek. You wouldn’t think to look at him as he looks like an Englishman in New York. Very clean, crisp, nice suite and umbrella. But as we spoke he took out an arsenal of devices from his pocket to give me live demos.

I was shocked but very involved. In a short space of time we went over his key investments http://www.vauxlesventures.com/currently.htmlM3 Mobile, Mo’Jiva and Cellufun. I told him that I didn’t like the name Cellufun and he forgave me for not liking it – but told me to definitely check it out. His investment he assured me has usability first.

In fact the most of the time was spent talking about Mo’Jiva as I had firsthand experience in using and testing it. He said that al lot of his decisions in investment were about the team and raved about Dan Goikhman and Krish (OMG can’t remember surname!).  He said that innovation was about creation and even though mobile advertising might be getting crowded – the company that would succeed would be the most usable. User interface was the killer and as a prerequisite whatever he invested in simplicity and ease was essential.

I mentioned that I had had some hiccups with M3Mob and he said that that was probably because I was a very very early tester. The campaigns and promotion for the mobile social network have been scaling and he said that very exciting times were ahead.

Now, I am sure that all angel investors would tell a similar story. But I have to say, Miles has something very likable and bullish about him. He mentioned he was on a TV programme in the states (like the Dragons Den). You can see Miles on TV as he has that kind of look and he was very different to Doug Richard (who just scares the life out of me!).

But anyway, I will be using Mo’Jiva as part of my Mobile SEO services and will keep on reporting.
