World Telemedia: Skype in a scrape

Rating: sharp learning curve

Skype looks like it has bitten off more than it can chew. I was told this morning that Skype had just lost GBP180,000 in two hours due to dropped charges – fraud –  in its efforts to open up premium rate numbers globally and hosting them for global use. This was the coda to Rouzbeh Heidarzadeh Pasha’s presentation who is head of Skype’s premium services.

To add to the confusion, users calling premium numbers won’t be charged less than calling them any other way, which is going to upset unwary consumers who naturally associate Skype with free or very cheap calls. They are in for a nasty surprise.
