Zodigo spins off from Zodiac Interactive for mobile content search engine

by: Bena Roberts Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Zodigo was part of Zodiac Interactive – but no more! Now Zodigo is a mobile content search engine (TV)  in its own right and has been spun off from its parent company.

From the press release
“This is a very good move for Zodiac Interactive and Zodigo.  The proliferation, breath and depth of mobile content is enormous, and it will continue as more people rely on their mobile phones for entertainment and mobility in the workplace,” said Alex Libkind Zodiac’s founder and Chief Operating Officer.   “Although, our technologies can be complimentary, Zodiac is focused on Interactive Television 2.0 applications and entertainment, and we need to continue to focus on Interactive Television as it moves from native to On Ramp to OCAP/ tru2way.  We will continue to support the demand from operators for the next level of interactivity and entertainment from TV subscribers.  Whereas Zodigo is very mobile centric and requires a team that can focus specially in this area, which is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing markets in the world.  We launched Zodigo as a subsidiary just a few months ago, and we’re pleased the company has already reached this point. ”

“We recognized the explosion the mobile market is facing today, and will continue to face as more and more people rely on their mobile phones and portability to stay connected, personally and professionally,” said Matt Johnston, Zodigo’s CEO.  “Mobility is not a trend; it’s the future. In order for Zodigo to be truly successful as the prominent source for mobile content discovery, it needs to be a complete entity and focus solely on the mobile content sector, which is huge and continuing to grow rapidly. With this move, we believe that Zodigo will have all the opportunities to become the #1 place where people can easily find and download exciting new content for their mobile devices.”

What we think?
Taptu, find.mobi, ABPhone, Veveo, UpSnap, Zodigo the rise of the independent mobile search engine space is on the up. But what does it mean and do we care?

When push comes to shove, I do care, very deeply about a strong mobile search service. Made for mobile services such as those I mention are trying to make mobile search rock.

How?
Well. By simply offering and showing the best possible search results for any query.

But is it enough?
Well, actually. I am not sure if a pure mobile search engine, or a content search engine or a social media mobile search engine is enough. Indeed, the mobile search engines are using “social popularity” as a key feature for choosing which results get to the top of the search engine – but this will not be enough moving forward.

What is needed is collaboration and (bear with me) a super mobile search engine. I know this is going to sound sort of mad, but a group of search engines for music, social media, news, content etc should join forces to create a portal, not just a search box for a mobile network of searches based on mobile relevance.

This will make the search stronger as users have a choice of results from all new media and not just one channel. Content isn’t king and it’s not enough either to create a killer new business.
