Consumers still confused over mobile brands
Rating: is Android a phone maker, a model of device or a market?
Some very interesting research into mobile brands has been carried out by Roxy Palace, which develops games across all mobile OS platforms. But then the company would have to because it is actually behind mobile casinos. Now, we’re not quite sure where Roxy was trying to go with its research but in doing so it has come up with some interesting research into mobile brands. This is a good example: – ten per cent of respondents were able to name Research In Motion (RIM) as makers of the BlackBerry as opposed to 64 per cent who thought Blackberry was the manufacturer of mobile phones rather than the model name. Actually, that’s good going. Continue reading

London Underground’s cellular situation gets spookier
Rating: Alcatel- Lucent must have spoken out of turn
Only days after GoMobile News hinted here that there were sinister reasons why there is still no cellular coverage on the capital’s underground railways system, events have taken a very unexpected turn. Ben Verwaayen, Alcatel-Lucent CEO, told the UK’s Daily Telegraph here that the company would start introducing broadband and mobile phone reception to London Underground trains. The French-American telecoms company is not in the habit of making extravagant claims. However, shortly afterwards the official body that runs London’s transportation – Tfl (Transport for London), told Tech Week Europe here that there was no truth in the report whatsoever. Which gives even more credence to GoMobile News‘ allegations that there is something sinister about England’s capital city’s lack of cellular coverage on its Underground system. Continue reading

GoMo discovers neat F1 Timing app on official site
Rating: A great way to keep track of your favourite Formula One driver
Here at GoMobile Towers we’re pretty much a bunch of petrolheads and the Formula One Grand Prix is our special favourite. The snag is that currently here in Blighty (the UK), certain races are only shown live on pay-per-view TV. In our case, BSkyB’s Sky F1 channel. Now the normal way for any Brit to deal with such a situation is to go down the pub (bar) and watch F1 on the big screen. The trouble is that the UK is a nation of footie and rugby fans and there’s a Spain versus Italy soccer match right in the middle of this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix. Trying to sort out this mess, GoMobile News happened to visit Formula One’s mobile friendly web site – http://mobile.formula1.com/ where we noticed the official F1 2012 Timing app. We just had to download it. O2 & Vodafone plot to get ready for 4G
Rating: If everything goes to plan they’ll combine physical infrastructures
It’s a move with the biggest benefit being that the two UK network operators involved – Vodafone and O2 (Telefónica UK), get to create a 4G network pretty quickly, the pair has announced plans to pool the basic parts of their network infrastructure. This would create one national grid running each of the operator’s independent spectrum. This kind of thing has been going on for a while. 3 UK famously allied with T-Mobile which then got complicated when T-Mobile and Orange combined to create Everything Everywhere. It also builds on an existing arrangement between Vodafone and O2 in which they could basically share their structures/masts – but not the basic underlying backbone network infrastructure.
