Fiksu re-schedules webinar on UDID alternatives
Rating: Developers get second bite of the cherry
Unfortunate for Fiksu but not so for Apple mobile app developers, the company had some technical difficulties with a webinar which it had to cancel at the last minute. Entitled ‘Marketing Attribution – Beyond the UDID’, we originally publicised it here but it has now been rescheduled for Friday, June 15th 2012 at 11 am EDT / 8 am PST / 4 pm BST. GoMobile News reckons it would be well worth tuning into. Below is what we said about the webinar originally here. Continue reading

Fiksu offers webinar on UDID alternatives
Rating: You’d better hurry up and register for it
Apple’s recent decision to migrate developers away from UDID (Unique Device Identifier) has been covered in depth by GoMobile News here and here. The alternatives were outlined by us here. Now Fiksu is running a webinar entitled ‘Marketing Attribution – Beyond the UDID’ to provide developers with an informed view on the current state of the iOS app ecosystem. This webinar will give developers an overview of technology alternatives to UDID; their pros and cons; and, naturally, an outline of Fiksu’s approach to the problems. Continue reading
Teething problems discovered in European data roaming bundle
Rating: Orange needs to fine tune its offer
Having just attended probably the biggest event in the 2012 calendar covering the subject of ‘roaming’ – MACH Insights 2012, GoMobile News thought we’d better taste our own cooking, so to speak. The results were – er, um, slightly unfortunate. We ran into several bugs which definitely need ironing out. These incidents helped to illustrate that the roaming industry is still very much in its infancy and the data roaming side, even more so. Continue reading
Lack of London Underground mobile coverage a national disgrace
Rating: Is there a sinister reason behind it?
Regular readers of GoMobile News will know we’ve long been a harsh critic of the lack of cellular connectivity on London’s Underground rail network (affectionately known as The Tube). As reported previously here and here Virgin Media is deploying Wi-Fi on London Underground stations ahead of this Summer’s Olympic Games. That system will only serve those standing on London Underground platforms. So, Ian Brown, CEO with wireless coverage specialists, Axell Wireless has made an impassioned plea to extend wireless connectivity on-board the trains as well. This would provide coverage for the full range of mobile voice, messaging and data s ervices. Why hasn’t it happen? Well, GoMobile News thinks there’s a sinister reason behind it. And the Chinese could be to blame. Continue reading
Why mobile absolutely needs IPv6 Net addresses
Rating: M2M big driving force behind it
Today [June 6th 2012] has been named World ‘IPv6 launch day’. Now that might seem totally irrelevant to the world of mobile but the exact opposite is true. It’s all about giving every device connected to the internet a unique ID number or address. What you are almost certainly using today is Ipv4. Which allows for a mere 4.3 billion unique addresses. Sound enough until you realise that Ericsson (which is still world leader in providing mobile network infrastructure) has worked out that there will be around nine billion mobile devices in five year’s time [2017]. So we desperately need IPv6 which offers a mere 340 undecillion addresses (that’s 340 followed by 36 zeros). In order for this to work the networks need to switch it on. And guess what M2M (machine-to-machine) comms is one of the biggest driving forces behind IPv6? Continue reading
GoMo networks with four industry gurus at MACH Insights
Rating: Brøgger, Bubly, Lewis and McNiece
One of the key benefits of attending MACH Insights 2012 here in Prague was meeting up and speaking to the analysts who attend this event. Best value for money must surely be Dean Bubley from Disruptive Analysis who always came up with incisive questions. Unlike Alun Lewis from Silicon2Synapse, however, Bubly didn’t speak or chair a Panel Discussion. So it was left to Susan McNiece from Software Market Insight to provide us all with some very interesting stats for public consumption. Her major contribution was to introduce ARPA as a term which is apparently the successor to ARPU. Continue reading
Only 14% of apps address enterprise needs
Rating: research2guidance looks at ‘off the shelf’ apps
The number of enterprise-relevant apps has doubled from 100,000 to 200,000 over the past 12 months (Q1 2011 to Q1 2012), according to research2guidance. However, of those 200,000 in the stores, only 14 per cent truly address core enterprise needs, the company claims in its ‘Enterprise Mobile App Status Report 2012′. ” What we see today is just the tip of the iceberg. There will definitely be a market for mobilising core enterprise functions, like sales and services,” says Ralf-Gordon Jahns, research director with research2guidance. Companies are in creasingly deploying mobile apps to connect to partners and employees following the successful adoption of customer-focused mobile apps, the report argues. Continue reading
MACH claims to have delivery model of tomorrow
Rating: We grab some face-time with Morten Brøgger, CEO with MACH
Here at MACH Insights 2012, GoMobile News managed to grab some face-time with Morten Brøgger, CEO with MACH. The company is perhaps best known for its expertise in the field of ‘roaming’. However, MACH is mutating fast. “We have the delivery model of tomorrow,” Brøgger proudly boasted. “Our one-to-many delivery model provides economies of scale,” he added. Continue reading

Hectic schedule prevents MACH Insights 2012 reports
Rating: We’d like to tell you about today’s events but …
The trouble with attending a major mobile industry conference like MACH Insights 2012 (in Prague, Czech Republic), is that the organisers don’t take journalists into account! The company has such a tight schedule that we haven’t been able to sneak out to inform readers of what is going on. Continue reading
Guest Post: Do we still need independent mobile retailers?
By Adam Engledow, a director with Design Vibe Creative
With more and more mobile network operator owned stores opening up on the high street, plus the whole experience of dealing with the network operators direct improving each time you want to upgrade your phone – it starts to leave the question, why do we need independent mobile retailers any more?
