Android security app from Avast goes gold in just 16 days

A security app for Android mobile phones which GoMo News has been unashamedly recommending – avast! Free Mobile Security – has been installed by over one million smartphone users in just 16 days. As Ondrej Vlcek, Avast Software‘s CTO put it, “It required Lookout a full six months to reach the one-million level for their mobile security product.” But Avast managed it in virtually a fortnight. It might have been quicker if Avast had formally informed us the full – rather than beta – version had finally been released.*Vlcek rejoiced that, “This has been a really fast-paced launch, surpassing the results from competing products.”

The company has proved two very important points … firstly that there’s nothing wrong with an anti-virus product just because it is free.

And secondly that there was big pent-up demand for a security product amongst the Android community.

“Before we launched avast! Free Mobile Security, we knew that only 30 per cent of our users with Android phones had a security program installed on it, but that over 60 per cent would be interested in the feature set provided in avast! Mobile Security,” said Vlcek.

The language division for Android downloads closely parallels that of Avast’s product for Window based PCs.

The three most selected languages during the download process were French at 15.6 per cent, followed by United States English with 11.5 per cent, and Brazilian Portuguese at 11.4 per cent.

avast! Free Mobile Security was launched in seven languages on the Android Market but the company is promising that it will be adding more languages shortly.

Avast currently protects over 145 million active and 190 million registered users around the globe with its security and antivirus applications.

Significantly, avast! Free Mobile Security is one of a tiny minority of mainstream Android apps which provides more, fuller features when the user ‘roots’ his or her Android handset.
